This summer, I had the opportunity to work as a Data Engineer intern at Tenet Health, a leading healthcare organization operating a vast network of hospitals and surgical centers. The experience provided me with valuable insights into the healthcare industry's data and analytics domain.
Key Projects and Responsibilities
During my internship, I was involved in migrating stored procedures from SQL Server to Google BigQuery. This project aimed to optimize the organization's data processing by leveraging BigQuery's distributed and parallel processing capabilities. I contributed to transforming SQL queries, ensuring efficient data ingestion, and generating essential report tables for the analytics team.
Skills Developed
This internship allowed me to hone various technical skills, including SQL, data migration, and transformation. I also gained experience in error handling, debugging, and performance optimization. Beyond technical skills, I developed strong communication and problem-solving abilities, which were crucial for collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing data-related challenges.
Challenges and Learnings
One of the main challenges I faced was translating T-SQL functions to their BigQuery counterparts. This required a thorough understanding of both systems and meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, maintaining consistent naming conventions and navigating limited documentation were hurdles that sharpened my problem-solving skills.
