Summer 2020 Internship Experience with Katch Media
Katch is a movie recommendation engine that is revolutionizing the way we consume, market, and create movies. Streaming services don’t sell or share their useful or informative data with the movie studios or production companies because they are the competition. This forces the studios to make content decisions based on gut instinct and incomplete data. But don’t worry, Katch can solve this.
Katch is a data company that sells data-driven insights to movie studios and production companies to help in their decision-making process, satisfying their desperate need for information. The only way to be this data company, however, is to be the best movie recommendation engine in the business. With new streaming services popping up daily, deciding what to watch, especially when you aren’t alone, is an extremely painful process.
Katch is a free mobile app that combines all of your streaming services into one fully-integrated solution. Whether you are watching by yourself or with others, Katch will factor in all viewers’ tastes before making recommendations. Using our intuitive, easy, and fun approach you can rate 20-30 movies per minute, fine-tuning your preferences with every swipe. Katch then recommends the best movies you have access to and will love for sure!
As a Data Science intern with Katch Media, I had the opportunity to work with an amazing team. I've been working on collecting data to automate the coding of the genome elements using publicly available data from the Internet. Once data has been collected, it needs to be cleaned and transformed according to business needs. I scraped the data from websites using BeautifulSoup, Scrappy, and Selenium. Our end goal is to rank each gene from 0-5 for each film by using Natural Language Processing with the Machine Learning technique. The weekly speaker series has opened me up to various new possibilities. I have met so many people through these series and I look forward to learning from their experiences.
I would really like to thank the entire team that I worked with, especially Dr. Brett Danaher(Chief Data Scientist), Jesse Newby, Andrew Tight, and Jacob Clifton(CTO), Sabrina Petros who helped to support me throughout the process. Their thoughts, suggestions, and feedback helped me learn a lot during my time here. The learning plan devised by the team was amazing which helped me gain knowledge during my entire internship period.
I would like to thank Prof. Gaurav Shekhar and Prof. Mark Thouin for making the ITM program flexible and helping to make this internship process work smoothly.
