The paper examined in this summary reported on a study about the effectiveness of management information systems (MIS) on strategic and tactical planning within two financial organizations. It attempted to contrast the level of differential effect of MIS on government and private financial firms - “case one” being the governmental and “case two” the private - both located in the nation of Bahrain (Karim, 2011).
The paper began by highlighting the importance of MIS in the realm of financial institutions. It provided various definitions of MIS, and briefly covered the short history of the profession. The author quotes Kenneth and Jane Laudon, who define MIS as the study of information systems with a focus on applications in business management (Karim, 2011). The historical overview highlights that MIS began with a focus on two major components: transaction processing systems (TPS) and management reporting systems (MRS) (Karim, 2011). TPS collected and stored factual data on business transactions, while MRS provided reports to help management maintain operational control (Karim, 2011). After the first two decades in the business sector, MIS began to shift towards an emphasis on the business management side (Karim, 2011).
The latter portion of the paper covers methods used in the study which interestingly utilize information systems and data analysis to form its conclusion. The researchers collected the data using a questionnaire with Likert scales (Karim, 2011). The data was then analyzed using correlational tests and linear regression analysis to identify differences between the effectiveness of MIS on strategic (long-term) and tactical (short-term) decision making (Karim, 2011). It concluded that MIS had a positive effect on a financial firm’s decision-making capabilities based on both strategic and tactical planning. Strategic planning, in particular, was enhanced by MIS to a higher degree than tactical planning (Karim, 2011).
