Summarize meetings with the power of AI

Meetings are a constant presence in our life, giving us structured opportunities to coordinate with our teams and strategize about the upcoming work to be done. In order to maximize the effectiveness of meetings, it is important to review the key topics that were discussed and formulate action items for the participants and other members of the team. According to Booqed.com , 83% of employees spend up to 12 hours per week in meetings. And for every hour spent in meetings, project managers typically spend 30 minutes to an hour on meeting follow-up. In addition to the cost of the meeting itself, which Booqed.com calculates to be around $338 per hour for a 5 person meeting, the follow-up can cost between $25-$50 per meeting hour based on the median salary of a project manager. This issue compounds on itself because project managers typically attend every meetings. They end up spending over half their time in meetings, and the follow-up alone can cost up to $1000 per month.

There are several solutions available now from different companies, and this seems to be a leading use-case for generative AI. Big companies like Zoom and Amazon have built meeting summarizers utilizing integrations with their products, though both seem to be in somewhat early stages of full integration. Many smaller companies have shipped meeting summarizers with various pros and cons. Some notable contenders are Fathom , Jamie , and Laxis amongst many other offerings. The cost of these tools can range dramatically from free to $99 per month, with some charging up to $40 per user per month.

I have built my own meeting summarizer that is simple, easy-to-use, and free. Simply upload a text file containing a meeting transcript and generate your report. Powered by AI running on my home data center, your data is never exposed to 3rd parties and is not saved. Harnessing the power of open source large language models adds value through continuous improvement without cost increases. Using my tool, anyone can quickly and easily generate a summary and follow-ups for any meeting, saving time and money in the process. This tool will assist project managers and other users become more efficient by reducing the overhead of generating reports, only requiring minor edits to ensure alignment with the business strategy and goals.

My tool is certainly on the simpler end of the spectrum of meeting summarizers. In the future I would like to add a number of features. Integrating a history of meetings that can be searched through and used in the generation of future meeting summaries, in addition to integrations with issue tracking and project documentation, would add tremendous value. Drawing inspiration from some of the other tools on the market, I would love to add a chat feature for interrogating and exploring both the transcript and summary of meetings.

Generative AI can help to enhance the work we do and save us time on the menial tasks, and beyond. Though it is still in its infancy, I can hear the thundering sound of millions of keys racing to extract value from large language models. We are a long way off from conscious AI, but the ubiquity of AI tools is apparent and increasing every day. I am excited and proud to be a small part of the AI stampede!
