5th Ministerial meeting of the bilateral Commercial Dialogue held between India and the United States of America.

On 10 March 2023, one of the major outcomes of this commercial dialogue was the establishment of a semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership were discussed. A memorandum of understanding on semiconductors was signed between both the countries fostering innovation and development in the sector. The agreement seeks to establish a collaborative mechanism between the two governments on semiconductor supply chain resiliency and diversification in view of US CHIPS and Science Act and India’s Semiconductor Mission. The MoU envisages mutually beneficial research and development as well as talent and skill development in both the countries. Semiconductor manufacturers worldwide are forecast to increase 300mm fab capacity to an all-time high of 9.6 million wafers per month in 2026, according to SEMI. For students studying VLSI, bilateral initiatives like this make way for increasing demand for trained engineers thereby making this industry recession proof.

Co-founder of Intel Corporation, Gordon Earle Moore passed away on 24th March 2023

He proposed Moore's law, the observation that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit (IC) doubles about every two years.

Three things to know about this legendary engineer:

1. After a brief research career, Moore joined Silicon valley's first semiconductor company Shockley Semiconductor in 1956 where he met his future Intel co-founder Robert Noyce.
2. In 1968, Moore and Noyce started a memory chip company called Integrated Electronics which later came to be known as Intel.?
3. In 1965, Moore predicted that the number of transistors on microchips would double roughly every year due to improvements in technology. This became known as Moore's Law. 10 years later, Moore revised his prediction to a doubling of transistors on an integrated circuit every two years.

Semi conductor park in India! - Path Ahead!

The Hiranandani Group, a private sector company, has sought 100 acres of land from the Yamuna Expressway Authority for setting up a semiconductor park in the country. Under the Indian semiconductor mission,? this initiative puts India one step ahead on its path to chip development. According to Hiranandani, the company anticipates an investment of over Rs 2,500 crore in the first phase, which should be implemented within 24 months of receiving all approvals. Rapid development of the semiconductor industry in India is good news for all the engineers looking to develop a career in this field.
