Sully Historic Site, Chantilly, Virginia
How often do you drive along Virginia Route 28? You are on your way to Dulles Airport, or you are going to visit the National Air and Space Museum Steven Udvar Center. While on the way you see signs for the Sully Historic Site. You are very curious. What is here? It says, ‘tours available’. Maybe you should check this place out.
What is this place? It was the home of Richard Bland Lee, the first congressman to represent Northern Virginia, and later the home of Francis Lightfoot Lee II. It was a farm where he grew his own crops. It was a large piece of land of which part of it was acquired to become Dulles International Airport. The house and the outbuildings remained. The property was later acquired by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
Today, you can tour the home and the outbuilding which includes the kitchen, the laundry room, the smokehouse and the slave quarters. Admission for the tour is $8.00. There is also a trail, and a section of the Unfinished Railroad runs across the property. Sully Historic Site also has events throughout the year. Once you have visited this place, you will be asking, “Why have I not visited this place sooner?”
Sully Historic Site is at 3650 Historic Sully Way in Chantilly, Virginia just of Virginia Route 28 between U.S. 50 and Dulles Airport. Just follow the signs from Route 28 to the site. There is plenty of parking on the site.
