Suicide Prevention Week: Shining a Light on Mental Health Among Youth
Private School Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for 1st-12th Grade Students
National – As we mark Suicide Prevention Week, it is crucial to address the pressing mental health issues affecting our youth today. According to the CDC, suicide stands as the third leading cause of death among high school-aged youths aged 14–18 years. Mental health challenges are a growing concern for teens and young adults, with suicide rates among young people increasing over the past decade. Alarmingly, 42% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in the past year.
Brightmont Academy serves as a vital resource in addressing these challenges. Annette Looser, Campus Director at the Birmingham location, notes, "One of the most common perceptions of parents who visit is that they love everything about the 1:1 but fear that their child will get no social opportunities. I feel like what is unique about Brightmont is that we offer a customized approach to education (and scheduling) to meet the individual needs of each family."
Looser's commitment to creating a positive educational environment is evident in her mission: "My personal mission as Campus Director is for each child to feel great coming to school each day. So many of our kids have not always felt great going to school, and I want their time at Brightmont to be one of their greatest memories when they get older. I want them to first walk into a safe, positive environment where they can be accepted for who they are. Then, the academic piece almost always falls into place with our great teaching staff. I feel like some of our kids are very empathetic toward others because of what they have experienced in their previous environments, and I have witnessed some of our kids making great friendships here along the way to graduation."
Looser has helped many students who have dealt with mental health issues, providing a supportive and understanding environment. She emphasizes, "As a campus director, there is no greater feeling to know that our Birmingham team was part of that initial experience, and I have many teachers who thrive on seeing kids like this succeed!"
