Sudden Inspirations: Test Automation

There’s a lot of automation that can happen that isn’t a replacement for humans, but of mind-numbing behavior.” - Stewart Butterfield

I’ve been in the Quality profession for almost two decades now and actually started my career in the test automation space. Here are my three thoughts on the matter:

  1. Test Automation is Operations, Not a Project:Test automation should be viewed as an ongoing operation rather than a finite project. It has no end; it should never end. Continuously improve and adapt your automated testing processes.
  2. Focus on Repetitive, Data-Intensive, Time-Consuming Processes:As the quote suggests, prioritize automating tasks that are repetitive, data-intensive, and time-consuming. Not everything needs automation. Identify areas where automation can provide the most value.
  3. Always Revisit the Purpose of Test Automation:Regularly assess the purpose behind your test automation efforts. Monitor and analyse the impact it has on your organisation. Gather actual data to understand the value it brings.

Remember, effective test automation is about achieving efficiency, reliability, and meaningful results.
