Succession planning recap, what we're reading, and new roles

Welcome to this week’s RFS Report!

Thanks to everyone who joined us last week to discuss succession planning for startups with Tom Callahan and Diane Rigatuso. If you missed the session, you can catch the recording here - but we’re sharing a few takeaways as well.

  • The basics of succession planning are to assess, identify and develop. Assess is probably the most difficult step because this means taking a scan of your entire company’s goals and initiatives (for now and in the future). Identify means to determine where the skills gaps are, what talent is needed in order to meet those goals, and who in your organization have some of these skills. And then develop means to spend time working on developing these skills in current hires - or working to identify external hires.
  • One of the most common reasons succession planning fails is because it’s inconsistent. “It should never just be something that’s a goal for one year and not the next - It’s an initiative for everybody's everybody's corporate goals going forward,” according to Diane. At Diane’s company, leaders were asked to present succession plans to the board for this very reason - to make sure succession planning was at the forefront.
  • Executive search partners and agencies can bridge gaps. “Talent teams definitely do a great job, but when you're looking for very specific skills and very specific people or talent, it really does help to have a very good partner on your side,” says Diane. External agencies often have a broader understanding of the industry and can provide another set of eyes when talent teams are searching for specific skillsets.
