Topic of the Day- Cold weather painting. When. How. Why?
Let's jump right in-
Here is a frequent question I get in the industry from my clients about painting. How cold is too cold, or how hot is too hot to paint? Simple answer is, chase the shade in summer, and chase the sun in winter!
Hot and cold weather can both have an impact on the quality of your exterior paint job, so it's important to understand how to properly paint in these conditions. So, we'll discuss the best practices for painting in hot and cold weather.
Painting in Hot Weather
Painting in hot weather can be challenging, as high temperatures can cause the paint to dry too quickly, leading to poor adhesion and uneven coverage. Here are some tips to help you get the best results when painting in hot weather:
The- When. How. Why?
Try to avoid painting during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Instead, plan to paint early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the temperature is cooler.
2. Keep Your Paint Cool
Store your paint in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming too hot. If the paint is too warm, it can become thin and difficult to work with. Also, per manufacture specs, it may be necessary to add up to 4-6 oz. (per gallon) of clean water to maintain workability of latex paints.?(*Read specs)
3. Use the Right Tools
In hot weather, it's best to use a paintbrush or roller that's designed for use in high temperatures. These tools are made with materials that can withstand the heat and will help you achieve a smooth, even finish.
4. Work in Small Sections

Painting in small sections will help you avoid having the paint dry too quickly. This will give you more time to work with the paint and ensure that you get good coverage.
5. Pro Tip
?Avoid painting in the late afternoon when surfaces have had a chance to heat up and it becomes too hot to apply paint. Last, keep your brushes and rollers loaded with paint; work in smaller areas; and apply paint at a consistent, steady pace to get a good, uniform finish.
Painting in Cold Weather
Painting in cold weather can also present challenges, as low temperatures can slow down the drying process and lead to poor adhesion. Here are some tips to help you get the best results when painting in cold weather:
When. How. Why?
Before you start painting, make sure that the temperature will be above 50°F for at least 24 hours. This will ensure that the paint has enough time to dry and cure properly.
2. Use the Right Type of Paint
Choose a paint that's designed for use in cold temperatures. Most high-quality paints will work, just read the fine print and or speak with your local paint supplier. These paints are formulated with ingredients that help them dry and cure in low temperatures.
3. Take Your Time
In cold weather, the paint will dry more slowly, so it's important to take your time and work in small sections. This will help you avoid having the paint run or sag.
In Conclusion
Painting the exterior of your home can be a rewarding experience, but it's important to take the weather conditions into consideration. Whether you're painting in hot or cold weather, following these tips will help you achieve a beautiful, long-lasting paint job. Remember to plan your painting schedule, use the right tools and materials, and take your time to ensure that you get the best results possible. Also, don't forget to chase the shade in summer, and chase the sun in winter!
