Successfully negotiating your next pay increase.

Successfully negotiating your next pay increase.

You've got what it takes. Negotiation is a skill that can be learnt, not an inherent trait.

  1. Quantify Your Value: When asking for a pay increase, highlight specific achievements, projects, skills or initiatives where you've added measurable value to the organisation.
  2. Take charge of your negotiations: It's common for individuals, especially women, to feel hesitant about requesting a salary increase or showcasing their accomplishments. If you find yourself in this situation, think of it as stepping into the role of your own negotiator, helping to ease any potential emotional or awkward moments that may arise.
  3. Get the support of a career coach: A coach can offer personalised strategies to navigate challenging conversations, ensuring you present a compelling case for the compensation you deserve.
  4. Speak the language of the business: Connect your achievements to the company's goal and bottom-line language of the business:
  5. Have an attractive alternative: Having attractive alternative like interest or offers from other organisations, an interest in moving into another department or other benefits or development that could be agreed on.
  6. Cultivate Connections: Make certain that your accomplishments are well-known to leaders and key stakeholders, fostering a sense of shared vision and alignment with company goals. You don't know who else will be involved in discussing your potential salary increase.
  7. Focus on Market Value: Use salary surveys and industry research to understand the typical compensation for professionals in your position with your experience level.
  8. Timing is Key: Choose a moment when the company is performing well, and you have recently achieved notable successes.
  9. Be prepared for Pushback: If there is pushback or lowballing take in the information calmly, say that you are disappointed and want a moment to understand their response. Then head back in with further evidence to support your case.
  10. Follow Up Professionally: After the negotiation, send a follow-up email expressing gratitude for the discussion. Regardless of the outcome, maintain a professional and positive demeanor.

Remember, negotiating a pay increase is a nuanced process that requires preparation, communication skills, and a strategic approach.
