Successful Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (Triple A) Saves 65-Year-Old High-Risk Cardiac Patient

Zulekha Hospital Sharjah shares the #successful treatment of a challenging case involving Mr. Marwan, a 65-year-old male with multiple #comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and a #smoking history with a positive family history of #atherosclerotic #arterial disease. This case marks a significant milestone as it is the first of its kind treated at Zulekha Hospital, showcasing the hospital's capability in handling #complex #vascular conditions in the private sector. The successful outcome was made possible through the collaborative efforts of specialists from radiology, vascular surgery, cardiology, and interventional radiology including Dr. Mahmoud Farouk - Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Sathish Kandasamy - Specialist Interventional Radiology and Dr. Nafad Elhadidi - Consultant General Surgeon.

Mr. Marwan presented at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah complaining of lower limb pain, leading to the #diagnosis of an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) measuring 4.8x5.4 cm. The lifetime risk for AAA in men is 8.2 percent, and 10.5 percent in #smokers. Following a comprehensive evaluation, Mr. Marwan was counseled on endovascular repair using the percutaneous technique, Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR), which he readily #accepted.

Dr. Farouk commented on the procedure, stating, “The procedure was done in the Cath Lab under #local #anesthesia, using a sophisticated 14-F delivery system for the graft stent, accessing both femoral arteries with meticulous precision. The collaboration among our multidisciplinary team was crucial in achieving such a positive outcome. Each specialty played a pivotal role, from accurate diagnosis and meticulous planning to the seamless execution of the procedure.”

The entire procedure, from incision to closure, lasted 90 minutes, with minimal contrast and #radiation exposure, ensuring the patient's safety and comfort. Mr. Marwan was discharged the following day and has since resumed his regular activities without complications.

A follow-up CT scan one month post-procedure revealed #encouraging results, including partial thrombosis of the aneurysm. He had no signs of leakage from the graft stent, affirming the efficacy of the #treatment approach.

Dr. Farouk highlighted that this #case exemplifies the medical team’s commitment to adherence to guidelines, precision in diagnosis, and collaborative decision-making. It emphasizes the dedication to #delivering #exceptional patient care through advanced #technology and #expert teamwork.
