The picture given here is the first time Leonel Messi came on to field as a substitute replacing Deco who was one of the greats at that time. And we all know how good Messi is now. Even birds take turns in leading migratory V formations constantly switching places to ensure every member gets an equal amount of aerodynamic assistance. But even in the days of AI and automations, it is very hard to implement team /role rotations at workplace. Keeping same set of talents in place is the simplest thing to do from a leadership/managerial standpoint. After all, why do the extra effort of finding someone else, enable them when everything seems working fine??
Top talents like new challenges, and they don’t want to feel trapped on the same project forever. They will leave if this is not taken care. New team members bring in fresh positive ideas and observations. It enables new learning; knowledge sharing and reduce people dependency. It increases employee engagement levels as they are likely to become increasingly engaged in new tasks that require innovative problem-solving as they had not completed such activities before.?
So, in our experience, we always try to?find opportunities for team rotations. If you are not able to rotate between teams, see if you can get them to do different roles / learn an additional technology available in same team. We have projects where one of our team members picked up an additional skill and now likes it more than his primary technology.
