Successful People Say NO First

Successful People Say NO First

I know what you’re thinking. Janine, you’ve lost the plot.?

Aren’t we always told that to be successful we need to go out and look for opportunities, create connections, and always be striving for more?

And while that is true, we need to be looking for opportunities… not all opportunities are equal and the most successful people understand this.??

Let me paint a picture for you.?

You have a goal in mind, maybe at this point it’s a revenue figure and to get there you know you need to do a few simple things each and every day to keep you moving forwards.?

But then opportunities start arising, some that almost sound too good to be true. They might seem to get you to your goal quicker, or you’ve seen someone else reach that level of success by doing something similar. You start following the new opportunity, losing your original direction as you grab?every single idea that floats past you.?

And before you know it 12 months have passed… and nothing has changed.?

You’re still searching for that next best thing. For your break into the market. For your success to land in your lap because you aren’t even sure what success really looks like anymore.?

But do you know what could have stopped all of this wasted time? All of this jumping around spending all of your energy chasing something you don’t know if you even want?

By saying NO to focus on yourself and YOUR path forward.?

Why would saying NO help??

Because it allows us to focus on what actually moves us forward.?

It stops us from getting fatigued or burnt out.?

It allows us to take control of our situation rather than being a passive participant in our own lives.?

But many of us find it hard to say NO, so instead of just talking about the benefits of saying NO (which there are many), I?wanted to run-through some of the?key things you need to develop to feel confident in saying NO.

  1. Get clear about what you want.?Understanding what you want allows you to understand exactly which opportunities are aligned with this path. Clarity allows you to make decisions with certainty and confidence allowing you to say NO to anything that will stand between you and your growth.?
  2. Unlearn that No means Bad.?NO isn’t a dirty word, despite what we may have been conditioned to believe. You need to get used to saying it to get over this mentality so start with small things. Say NO and don’t make up an excuse or reason as to why, saying NO should be enough. It could be saying NO to going to an event that you really don’t want to. Or NO to taking on extra work that is going to eat into your rest and recovery time. The more you practice, the less scary it becomes.
  3. Respect Your Own Time.?This is the idea of the dreaded scope creep. The inability to say NO to your clients, so you end up doing hours of unpaid, out-of-scope work. Not only is this your client not respecting your time, but it’s also you devaluing and not respecting your time. If you want clients who respect your boundaries and your time, you need to start by first setting an example and respecting your own time and boundaries. Say NO to scope creep and respect yourself, your work, and your time.
  4. Choose Your Ideas.?I was talking to my Elevate clients a few weeks ago about how ideas are always floating around and we get to choose whether we focus on them or not. You get to choose.?Is this idea the one that you want to work on, or is it an idea for someone else? Choose which ideas you want to spend your energy on instead of feeling pressured to chase the shiny things. Learn to say NO to?chasing ideas that aren’t aligned to your current path.?

If this has resonated with you and you want help elevating yourself and your business don’t be scared to?reach out. This is an opportunity you can say YES to.?
