Successful People

Successful People

I have hired thousands of people and helped build hundreds of companies and conducted many post-mortems on careers.

Here is what I know:

They hate to lose more than they like to win

They get good at something by doing it over and over. Knowledge, experience, action, outcome, adjust. Repeat.

They are good losers. Because they love the process and want to get back to work and become better, they actually embrace losing as an education process.

They have empowering self-talk. They ask themselves better questions like “What can I do to get better?” instead of “Why do I suck at this?”

They know that they are a work in progress. Only outcomes, never pass or fail.

They never depend on talent. They know that talent is the biggest liability to success. Work ethic beats talent in the long run.

Genetics loads the gun but lifestyle fires it.

They do not keep score. The score in the middle innings does not matter.

They outwork everyone. Developing talent takes years. Directed, intelligent and deliberate work can be impactful overnight. Add more hustle because you can control that.

They are fearless without being reckless. Be a student of asymmetrical risk.

They know that everything that they are good or great at today, they once sucked at.

Is this you?

I don’t think I have heard anyone break down success in such a clear way. I found myself nodding and saying, correct, correct, correct. It’s a great reminder that success is a process that is refined overtime by repetition through adversity and perseverance. Work ethic/hustle is the great equalizer to inherit talent.

Could not agree with you more. Thanks Joe

Thanks for sharing... this advice is trans-generational and diverse in its application. There are no shortcuts to success. The quicker one learns that failure and learning are the road to success without taking it personal or taking offense at failure the quicker you find success.

I love this. I love to win but losing is not an option for me. I lose and I go back and try again.. Work ethic and integrity are paramount to our industry!

Learned way more from losing than winning . . . awareness, self talk, learning, serving others, and grit lead to winning.
