Be A Successful Leader

Be A Successful Leader

Turn Your Culture Into A Competitive Advantage

The new year is here, and if you’re like me, you’re ready to make 2022 your best year yet. Much of what will determine your success in the coming year will be your ability to attract, onboard and retain your talent. But workers across the globe are putting their collective foot down, telling leaders loud and clear that they want better working conditions, pay and work-life balance. And with?11 million unfilled jobs in the United States?alone, it’s evident that companies aren’t creating careers that people want.

But what is culture exactly? Simply, it’s the organization’s set of norms, behaviors and expectations on thinking and acting. It’s how things are done within your company. While culture starts at the top, it’s the collection of behaviors, attitudes and attributes of all the individuals within your company. If your culture is toxic, it’s because people believe the only way to get ahead is to exhibit toxic behaviors. So how do you turn your culture into a competitive advantage??

???Define your culture

???Let go of toxic people

???Focus on developing strong managers

???Develop a strong onboarding program

???Prioritize vision and alignment

Advice From a CEO: Five Reasons Why Leaders Fail: Why Do Leaders Fail?

Why do leaders fail? Leading is hard. In today’s volatile world, the pressure to perform and execute has never been greater. Some days, things go right, and on other days, it feels like the organization is crumbling. Imposter syndrome sets in, causing leaders to question, “Do even I have what it takes to lead?”

Being in an executive position for fifteen years now, I have avoided catastrophic failure, but I have witnessed quite a bit of it. I hired executives I believed would succeed, helping me take the company to the next level, only to watch them struggle, deny, blame, and then flame out. Over the years, I have come to my own conclusions on why leaders fail and what we can do about it.

???They Lack Self-Leadership Qualities

???Confidence Turns to Arrogance

???They Can’t Build a Team

???They Disregard the Details

???They Fail to Communicate Well

Leadership Tip: Effective Listening = Effective Leadership

Listen. Listen. Listen.

If you want to be a better leader, be a better listener.?

Ineffective listeners make ineffective leaders. Everyone wants to be seen, heard and valued for their ideas, contributions and opinions. When a leader doesn't listen, it stifles problem-solving and collaboration. When employees feel unheard, they stop sharing ideas, bringing up problems and begin to actively disengage. Ineffective listening sabotages workplace culture.?

I wonder how this fits with the HBR article: More Than a Paycheck, https://hbr.org/2018/01/more-than-a-paycheck??which has more of an employee perspective. Afterall, to be a leader, you have to have followers.
