Successful Feedback: A Two-Way Street

Successful Feedback: A Two-Way Street

The key to successful feedback is one's ability to provide and another person's ability to accept. Its that simple but it begs the question why don't we train and coach employees on both the giving and reception of feedback? The combination could be very powerful!

Feedback is a skill and open that should be practiced, but sadly is not in most companies. Some managers wait till the last minute and the development opportunity is lost. Some people fear giving it so they are not effective in doing so often leading to a confused employee. Most employees ONLY receive constructive feedback as our contention is that the work world has become a very constructively reactive place.

I am going to share some weird thoughts to hopefully help you change your relationship with feedback:

  1.  Seek it before its given and your relationship with feedback will become positive
  2.  Feedback = Opportunity
  3.  Providing feedback is a privilege and one NOT to be taken lightly!
  4.  Feedback should NEVER solely be constructive ... dedicate equal if not more time top positive feedback.
  5.  Positive feedback helps open the mind when constructive feedback is needed to be given.
  6.  Leave a note with positive feedback as the written word can last longer than the verbal word
  7.   Send a card home to employees praising them for a "specific" job well done and now the family become loyal employees too!
  8.  Know every employee's personal goals as it builds trust and allows for a more open reception of feedback!
