What an atheist would say to this statement is what does sometimes happen though - by the law of averages - is that what someone has been praying for, actually occurs. Confirmatory bias then creeps in, and the fact that what that person has been praying for has happened, is immediately, and incorrectly, attributed to the prayer being answered by whatever god they prayed to. That's it, nothing more, nothing less; a mixture of coincidence and incorrect attribution.
But for a theist a prayer is connecting with God and believing in the universe that the karma will be paid back and prayers would be surely answered. Sometimes my prayers are answered without having to even say them, just wishing it in my heart and a few seconds later boom and other times I ask for just peace of mind and there it is given to me instantly.
Bible says, to test God and watch Him take care of me. I pray on Sunday, and wasn't sure I'd make rent that month and the next day, I got a paid for the exact same amount I had paid for from some old friends from a year earlier for things they had forgotten about. The value was not a round number either and it was exact to the penny. It was pretty amazing. And, no it's not always like that, but that time, for me, it was. There are many other instances, but I'll leave it at that one since it's the most objective.
God has without a doubt answered my prayers over and over again. Often he doesn’t answer them in the ways I expect or even want, but looking back I can see God’s goodness and sovereignty in every situation I’ve brought before him. Here is something I wrote about one of the most memorable prayers God has answered. I hope it can bring encouragement to whatever situation you find yourself in. But it built my trust much more in my prayers.
It is a beautiful thing to be invited into the work that God is already doing. Through His power and wisdom, He could meet His people’s needs without help from creation. It is only because of His infinite grace and love that we are allowed to participate in answering prayers. The Psalmist tells us, “Because He bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” Psalm 116:2. Our God hears us when we pray, and He delights in answering us in unexpected ways. Let us always bring our requests before Him, and never cease looking for ways to join in fulfilling the prayer requests of His people.
I think we need to be clear on what you are asking for, and clear particularly about the thing that matters most to you. You're, "I'll never give up on you" is a perfect example of that level of clarity. Then go through life from that point forward expecting to receive it. It will tend to happen, and it will tend to happen in an amazing fashion and fairly rapidly.
I myself went through a massive heart attack on board an aeroplane that was about to take off, but I prayed to God that please help me in this critical situation and within minutes the cabin crew realised when my wife told them what I was going through and alerted the pilot not to start the plane but to offload us in time so that I could reach the hospital and was given emergency medical treatment that is how I am here with you surviving a massive heart attack, cheers!
