Success through data and diversity
Today marks International Women’s Day. This is something that means a lot to me, particularly as a father of three daughters who are all building their careers. I want to live in a world where I know they will have the same opportunities that I have had.
Everyone wants equal opportunity in all aspects of their lives but especially in the workplace. While there has been progress we still need to ensure we are committed to achieving a better balance.
This was a factor in my decision to join Lendlease. We’re partnering with universities, industry bodies and peer companies to promote female careers in our sector. At a graduate level we’ve achieved a 50/50 gender balance in our global program.
Diversity and inclusion makes good business sense as it reflects our world, the Australian community and ultimately our customers.
Over the last 12 months, Lendlease reported an uplift in female promotions and appointments and we’ve doubled the number of men and women accessing parental leave, with the return rate for both being 99%.
And with these outcomes, we are seeing some amazing things.
One of our mechanical engineers has moved teams and is now working on our digital program as part of Lendlease’s transformation. She is focused on how our digital program functions as it relates to customers, privacy and security, and our global network.
Her enthusiasm about her role is evident, describing it as, “the absolute bee’s knees of the digital wave at Lendlease”.
I couldn’t be happier to hear this.
She is engaged in giving us a single view of our customers, coupled with some amazing analytics, to create an improved customer experience.
Our data is unique in the world of real estate and construction. So is our domain expertise.
However, it’s people that unlock the value.
Diversity in the workplace is an asset. Bringing diverse views and experience is the name of the game. And diverse views come from diverse people.
Our industry is one in transition, as it relates to diversity and inclusion. Our graduate numbers are incredible but as an industry we still have a long way to go.
On this International Women’s Day, it is important for everyone to take stock of what they can do to support diversity. From smaller actions to the bigger picture, find ways to make things better.
I want to take the opportunity to recognise everyone who is contributing to gender equality, but I also want to acknowledge we still have a way to go.
