Success on Social Media? It Depends...

The other day, someone asked me, “?sa, how can I be successful on X platform?”

(And by X, I mean LinkedIn, YouTube, or whatever platform you’re focused on!)

This is something I hear often from clients and contacts. And when my answer is “that depends,” I can almost feel the frustration. “You’re the expert, just tell me!” they say.

But here’s the thing: success really does depend on a lot of factors. Most importantly, it depends on this:

How do you define success? What’s your actual goal for being on that platform?

Let’s break it down:

1. Do you want to make a strong impression on those who find you?

If so, your first step is ensuring that your profile reflects your core brand story. It’s essential to have your "why" in place and to create a profile that encourages people to take action—whether that’s clicking a link, reaching out, or following you.

2. Do you want to become a big influencer?

Now, this is a different ballgame. If your goal is to gain thousands of views and likes, then you’ll need to dedicate hours creating content that inspires, informs, and transforms your audience. Day after day, week after week. Not everyone has the resources or time to do that.

And here’s the kicker: You might not need to.

If you’re a consultant or an expert offering services, you don’t need to be the next huge influencer. Your strategy should look very different from someone building a career purely as a content creator.

You need a strategy that allows you to connect with your audience and gain clients—not just followers.

Let me share a quick story:

One of my clients recently landed a six-figure deal with nothing more than a solid LinkedIn presence and a great reputation. She didn’t need to be a LinkedIn superstar. She didn’t have thousands of views on every post. But her stories were strong, and her brand was clear.

That’s the power of business storytelling.

It’s about creating and sharing stories that work for your business and align with what your clients care about. It’s about building relationships, not just impressions.
