Success or Significance; A Personal Reflection

The year is drawing to a close--and I have found myself in a reflective state of mind. I have questioned why things have happened and where I want to be heading into 2018.

I have learned through the various peaks and valleys in life (especially the past few years) that success is about fulfilling a checklist of wants and accomplishments and it ends at that, which got me thinking; what comes after you have all the boxes checked off on your ‘I am successful’ list? So I asked myself, “What else is there in life beyond personal, professional and monetary success?” This question sent me down a path in which I discovered the concept of significance; realising that there is so much more than what you and I can gain for ourselves; it is about what you and I can do for others. 

As I read about the concept of significance, I came across the notion that for one to gain significance in life, you must have successes along the way and those who seek significance are usually at a crossroad and are asking themselves (like I did); what next? I went on searching for the next logical step in creating significance in my life, and that was to find my purpose. 

I searched my soul for weeks trying to figure out what my purpose is; why I exist. I came to this conclusion; To make a real mark in this world, I will strive to inspire positive, actionable change in every interaction. So with this, I hope that every person I interact with will be better off for having associated with me. Gaining for myself and my career is not enough for me anymore, I want to share my knowledge with those who are open to learning, and I am ready to give back to those in need. 

This season in my life is about a journey on a path to significance and putting people at the forefront of every decision I make. When I say “people” I mean my family, friends, clients, and the stranger on the street. My plan for 2018 and beyond will reflect this. 

Through this journey of transition from success to significance, I have recognised that you have to embrace the world in front of you and forge through life with determination, heart, and truth. Only when you are honest with yourself and are open to being vulnerable will you start to see your path unfold in front of you. 

As we enter the holidays and the new year (some may say, a fresh start), have you decided what path you will take? If not, that is ok; I challenge you to reflect on your purpose and ask yourself, do you want to have success this coming year or significance in your life?
