Success at RoboSub 2023! - Month of August 2023

Top Team in North America!

Hey Folks,

This past week ARVP sent 28 members to San Diego for RoboSub 2023.?It was a week of suffocating sleep deprivation, subsystem fixing, manic coding, constant networking, and logistical woes. More than once, it seemed like our competition was insurmountable and our problems unsolvable.?

And yet through all these difficulties, ARVP’s strength shone through.?

Our Admin Team connected us with other teams, sponsors, and job opportunities, all while negotiating valuable pool times. Our Electrical Team maintained Arctos' internals, performed emergency soldering, and handled our batteries. Our Mechanical Team made last minute improvements to all our subsystems to ensure Arctos could complete competition tasks successfully. Finally, our Software Team heroically pulled together, working day and night for the entire week with little rest to ensure Arctos' perception capabilities and autonomy. Thanks to everyone's efforts, ARVP was able to walk the stage to receive $2,900 USD for 3rd place, best competition video, best design presentation, and the data sharing award.

But a week of work does not make a winning robot. Arctos' final run in the Transdec pool was the combined passion, drive, and ingenuity of every single member of our team both past and present. Each member's individual contributions to build Arctos from scratch were foundational bricks placed day-by-grueling-day to make something truly memorable and worth praise. You made this happen.

I want to highlight that again for all members reading this message. Arctos was built from scratch in less than 365 days. Everything mechanically and electrically was made this year. The software stack was completely rewritten - not a single line was copied over.

No other team at the competition came close to such an outrageous achievement, and it was only possible because of the dedication you put in. You made this robot. You made this community. You triumphed against the brightest other universities have to offer. Thank you.

Our sponsors also deserve recognition; their in-kind and cash contributions are the lifeblood of ARVP. Unsurprisingly, it’s not cheap to fly a robot across the continent, nor is it possible for Arctos to function without highly specialized hardware and software. ARVP covets the generosity of our sponsors and we hope to further our ties in the future. We would like to specifically acknowledge the 加拿大阿尔伯塔大学 , Altium? , 爱玛客 , ISS Mine Safety , the Engineering Students' Society, University of Alberta , Nortek , Copperstone Technologies Ltd. , MARL Technologies , Rail Shop Services Inc , and Cavalry Fence for all their support! Information on all our sponsors can be found at our website at arvp.org.

Though this year of ARVP is coming to a close, our work is far from over. Just like last year, we're aiming to do better by investing in our community, building our member’s skills, and improving Arctos. Stay tuned for more newsletter updates and our sponsorship showcase!

Cheers,

Nathan Chong (Project Co-Lead)
