Success Resistance

We've all seen the commercials about insulin resistance and how it can impair weight loss. While watching one, I realized that many people have Success Resistance and have trouble achieving. You can find that you are engaged in stressed busyness rather than thought-out action.
I found myself in this situation. I was running at 1000 miles an hour, working without achieving results. After some peaceful reflection, I found that I was focused on supporting tasks and not any time on the executables.
An example that came to mind was a charity dance I helped coordinate years ago. It was a fun event but a financial failure. We prepared the hall, hired the best DJ, and prepared the food, but very few people sold tickets. We perfected the supporting tasks and failed at the executables. We worked hard but avoided the tasks we needed to bring the project over a successful finish line. In other words, we had Success Resistance.
You can experience negative symptoms when are suffering from Success Resistance.
- Reduced motivation
- Self-doubt
- Emotional distress
- Burnout
Working hard without seeing any tangible results can be very demotivating and frustrating.
The cure to Success Resistance is to complete the tasks that will get you over the finish line.
A friend of mine was in a long job search. He was told he was doing the right things. People were surprised he had not found something yet. They told him to give it time.
He gave it time and got nowhere. It wasn’t until he started to treat the job hunt as a sales campaign that he started getting results. He networked in new places. Asked people for referrals and he started to get activity. He got over his Success Resistance and started to see results.
By biting the bullet and doing the possibly unpleasant tasks that need to be done, you can overcome Success Resistance and get a whole new set of feelings.
- Validation
- Confidence
- Satisfaction
- Excitement
You may even feel some relief. If you are experiencing success resistance, it may be time for some thoughtful reflection.
- Revisit your goals
- Catalog the steps needed to achieve those goals
- Look at your plan
- Identify steps you avoided
- Rewrite your plan to include those steps
- Execute your plan
Success takes more than action. It takes intentional, focused action. Overcome Success Resistance and achieve your goals!
