In the pursuit of success, one can often get caught up in personal aspirations and goals, forgetting the importance of helping others along their journey. However, there are individuals who understand that true success is not achieved in isolation but in lifting others up as well. I have always believed in this principle, and it has become an integral part of my professional life right from my earliest employment in 1984.
Throughout my career, I have made it a point to assist my subordinates and colleagues, and this commitment was further strengthened when I was offered an opportunity with a Swedish company, as mentioned in my previous discussion on Success Principle #4. This experience underscored the significance of collective success, leading to the realization that "We all win as a team or not at all," a motto that I have carried with me since.
One of the first significant instances of implementing this principle occurred in 1987 when the role of Telex operator began to diminish with the rise of technology. Witnessing the potential redundancy faced by a colleague in this position, I took it upon myself to help him upskill and transition into a role within the accounts and finance team. Over time, he not only excelled in his new position but also climbed the ladder to become a manager, showcasing the power of providing a helping hand to others.
In 1996, the wave of technological advancement struck again, affecting telephone operators and front office jobs. Recognizing the imminent challenge faced by seven of my colleagues, I stepped in once more to support them in upskilling and finding alternative employment opportunities within the organization. It brings me immense joy to see them now as accomplished General Managers and Vice Presidents, thriving in their careers.
One crucial example from my journey stands out, illustrating the significance of helping others even when it may not align with conventional wisdom. In 2007, I recommended a senior manager under my supervision for a General Manager position. Despite holding a General Manager position for myself, my immediate boss and HR manager opposed my decision. Undeterred, I provided strong justifications for his promotion, and he was eventually appointed as General Manager. Surprisingly, within six months, I was promoted to the position of Vice President within the same organization.
These experiences are not mere coincidences but rather clear evidence that supporting others in their growth journey leads to mutual success. When we foster an environment of empowerment and encouragement, it creates a ripple effect that positively impacts not just individuals but the organization as a whole.
Helping others grow is not just about selflessness; it is a strategic move towards personal growth and success. When we enable the growth of our team members, we create a collaborative atmosphere that breeds innovation, productivity, and loyalty. As leaders, it is our responsibility to identify the potential in others and provide them with the necessary resources, guidance, and motivation to unlock their full capabilities.
Furthermore, nurturing talent within the organization fosters a culture of trust and camaraderie, which translates into enhanced teamwork and ultimately better results. It is this collective spirit that propels an organization forward and sets the stage for sustainable success.
In conclusion, Success Principle #10 emphasizes the vital role of helping others in their growth journey. My professional experiences have reaffirmed the truth behind this time and again. As leaders and individuals striving for success, we must remember that our achievements are not solely determined by personal accomplishments but also by the positive impact we make on the lives of those around us. Let us all embrace the role of enablers of growth and work towards building a brighter future, not just for ourselves but for everyone we touch on our journey to success.
