Part 1: Creating a success mechanism

Early Exposure

"The difference between winners and losers is that winners will do the little things that losers won't do." My father's words sparked something in me at the age of ten. Though I didn't fully grasp their meaning then, I vividly remember where we stood outside our house in St. Petersburg, FL, as he set my drive to build a life with high standards in motion.

Predicting the choices we must make throughout our life's journey is impossible. My father instilled the following concepts in me to create a process and standard by which I engaged with and respond to life. The hardships I faced early on were pivotal and impactful in forging an unbreakable will that would continue to be tested in my time in the Navy, as a father, going through college as an adult, and even today in the business world, as I encounter life's challenges.

Life lessons from my father at an early age formed my success mechanism. This success mechanism would serve me well through life and has grown into my compass, leading me towards continued success and continually striving for goals.

The development process started with consistently planting seeds in the form of quotes, stories of successful coaches, suggested books to read, poems, and concepts from sales training and programs that he developed for Fortune 500 companies. I learned I could become who I wanted to be, and the following lessons helped forge the success mechanism I use.?

Success Mechanism Developed

I read about Maxwell Maltz's 'success mechanism' in his book?Psycho-Cybernetics. Maltz developed the idea of the 'success mechanism,' in which the brain and the nervous system work together like a goal-seeking guidance system. The success mechanism needs a defined target or goal to lock onto.?An 'already existing' mindset is required to activate the success mechanism.

The already existing mindset emphasizes visualizing your goals as already accomplished or emphatically possible.? Vividly imagining yourself achieving your goals impresses it on your subconscious mind and fuels the success mechanism. The success mechanism also runs off of an internal blueprint created?from?what I believe is realistic, achievable, and possible for me.

Some other core ideas from Maltz are that I will act like the sort of person I conceive myself to be. Our self-image, if held firmly, determines who we become. I can upgrade my behaviors by altering my self-image.?The 'success type' personality comprises a sense of direction, understanding, courage, charity, efficacy, self-confidence, and self-acceptance.

I have adapted the success mechanism idea, using concepts I have metabolized from what my father has taught me, the books I continue to read, and my own experiences.?Along with the success mechanism, there is a failure mechanism at play. It is a counterforce to the success mechanism and is activated by a negative self-image, negative self-talk, revivificating past failures, and limiting beliefs.?

My success mechanism is much like an operating system (OS)—my custom success operating system. The apps I installed and use daily are the lessons from my father, books, quotes, ideas from successful people, and my exposure and continued learning.?It is a collection of information I use to determine what I believe to be true about me and becomes the internal blueprint for my success mechanism. I add and subtract from it regularly depending on what I am trying to accomplish and from the results I experience. The following are the core apps I have kept installed for the last 35 years.
