"Success isn't owned, it's leased. And rent is due every day."

Thanks for reading. This is the 65th edition.

I've heard this quote from some inspiring people. Lacrosse player turned PLL co-founder, Paul Rabil is one of them. I'm not sure who first uttered it but like a lot of things in life, "creativity is recombination", as he would say. (Check out his book, The Way of the Champion... so good.)

And I would say, you just cannot rest on your Laurels. You've heard this before and maybe use it yourself. But where does it come from?

The term "laurels" refers to the wreath made from the leaves of the tree that was awarded to ancient Greek and Roman victors as a symbol of their triumphs. Resting on them, would mean you're living off of your past success rather than continuing to work towards new success.

Success can be defined in many different ways, but however you define it - you shouldn't take it as a prize. You need to use it as the fuel towards your next triumph.

And the way to your next triumph is through the work, every single day.

So... don't rest on your laurels - you can get into deep trouble if you do.

There is someone out there outworking you. They are in the shadows, waiting to take your business, your spot on the team, your ideas. It's not meant to be a scary visual (unless that works for you) but, as we've said before, you can't be upset with the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do.

Jerry Rice, arguably the greatest NFL wide receiver was seen working out at the 49ers practice facility the day after the team won the Super Bowl in the 1994 season. He was committed to excellence, growth and sustained success.

And as legendary NBA coach, Phil Jackson puts it, "You're only successful at the moment you perform a successful act."

Celebrate your wins but continue to stretch yourself to new goals. We should look past success as an accomplishment and think of it as an action that can and will be repeated.

And as Rabil would put it, "You can't miss a day."
