About Success and Happiness

“Success is getting what you want
happiness is wanting what you get”
- Dale Carnegie
This profound quote has often been repeated over the years. But what does it mean, and how can we apply it? Some people confuse success and happiness as one and the same when they can mean two completely different things. For example, success is achieving your goal through careful planning and hard work. Whereas happiness is being thankful for what you have and appreciating your journey.
There are so many successful people, but not all of them are happy. This is especially when people don’t know what they really, really want. The key I think, is making decisions that will make us happy. But first, we must figure out what matters most, and appreciate things we already have going for us.
My take on P1’s success will be defined by our customers, whether they remain subscribed to our service. Our repeat business and customers tell me that we are consciously getting better and more consistent at delivering good consumer experience. I think the secret sauce is making sure that our customers get what they want, while we focus organisationally on being lean, and purposeful in delivering great experiences to them.
One of my favourite examples of this is Uber. They are wildly successful, and I believe it’s because they ensure everyone benefits from a great experience. Drivers, customers, and the company all benefit. Everyone is motivated to deliver, end-to-end, this great experience. Not only do passengers rate drivers (which keeps the quality high), but even drivers get to rate passengers! It’s a win-win proposition, unlike the zero-sum game that exists in most traditional businesses nowadays.
The simplicity of use of the Uber app is what customers like the most. Uber created such a simple, yet awesome business model so relevant in international markets, yet so easily understood by everyone. This could well be the reason behind the strong growth and popular support for the Uber brand. When I look at Uber, I thought to myself,
"This is how we should be. If we are to transform our business, we should focus on delivering our value proposition to all our customers – keeping it simple, yet aligned and relevant.”
It's so elegant. Now, I recall that we've promised our customers an enhanced digital user experience. I believe we’ve reached a very good solution and I can’t wait for our roll out to be complete, so that we can launch our new service in the next few months! My team and I are working like crazy for this. We aim to be a disruptive force in our industry by delivering a few things that no one else do or copy (in the very least, not so easy to copy). We want our happiness and our customer's happiness to be one and the same. If we can do this, then I can say that we have achieved both success and happiness.
