What’s A Success Formula?
If you boil down every "success formula" that's ever been devised or published, you pretty much end up with the following.
1. Know where you're starting from "Your Reality”. (A)
Every journey has a starting place. With the journey towards success, it's an understanding of yourself, the resources you have available, and the realities of the world around you. Without this, any action you take will be meaningless, floating around not knowing how to get the results you crave.
2. Know where you want to be "Your Goal" (B).
Every journey must have a goal, too. Nobody defines success in exactly the same way, so your destination must be specific to you. The more specific the goal, the easier it will be to get there, which is why goal-setting is so essential. The goal MUST be written down, clear and specific with exact details of what you want to achieve.
3. Build a plan to get from A to B (quarterly, monthly, weekly & HPA).
Everyone needs a plan, so spend the time to create one. However, the trick with success plans is to remember that they're always tentative and subject to change. Use whatever role models and methods you like, but don't cast anything in concrete. Your plan MUST be broken down into smaller chunks, quarterly plan, monthly plan, weekly plans to ensure you have a visual representation of what needs to be done. Each plan should be a list of actions you need to take to achieve your goal. Oh yes and don’t forget to plan your contingency plans to ensure you have clearly thought through each planning stage.
4. Take massive action based on that plan.
Most people with a plan don't take enough action. A few tentative steps aren't going to let you discover whether your plan is working or not. Do 10 things when most people would be satisfied with one or two. You've got to totally smash this part of the success formula. Correctly identifying your High Payoff Activities (HPA) or your daily action plan is the key to everything you will do and is the measurement of cause & effect. This is NOT your task list, if it does not meet your goals it’s not an HPA.
5. Observe whether you're closer to B.
This is difficult for most people because once they've put some effort into a plan, they desperately want to see the results they hope for. They even see such results when they're not actually there. So take a hard, objective look. Get outside help if you need it. A plan MUST be fluid enough to change when things are not working out, I do a full planning process every 3 months to ensure I have something to measure against and change the plan when required.
6. If the plan is working, increase the focus on Step 4.
If you can prove to yourself (and to an objective observer) that the actions based upon your plan are truly getting you from A to B, then you should redouble your efforts. Take even more massive action. Don't forget, though, to do Step five afterwards.
7. If the plan isn't working, go back to step 3.
The reason you took massive action is that you can't fool yourself into thinking that the problem was that you didn't really try. You can now go back and build another plan, armed with the valuable knowledge of what didn't work.
Cause & Effect/Test & Measure: The success process, we have been doing it our whole lives, from learning to walk, ride a bike, even learning to drive. Constructive feedback, both positive & negative is absolutely imperative at this point.
Feedback: With everything in life, there are only a limited number of best practices available, if you are truly focusing on the above process you will know what is working and what is not pretty quickly. Take deceive action and start again. Remember MISTAKES are the way we know we are learning, we should be pushing towards this process. Learning from our MISTAKES show we are continuing to learn.
The whole point of every success formula is to reduce the influence of "luck" so that you don't have to think about it when you're either planning or taking action based on your plans.
So, what about the mindset required to be resilient and motivated enough to keep going and take the action required above. It’s easy to show you the way to gain and gather a formula for success but what if you just don’t think you can do it.
It works for them but not me “really”, why?
Well if you don't have the mindset to keep going and the belief to say you CAN, you’re never going to be successful anyway.
It’s never too late to adapt your current mindset to that of a winning mindset.
Too soon and too often is better than too late and not enough.
If you or your team are ready for the next part of your self-development, ready to grow and develop a mindset and goal setting process to surpass your competition and create your own future, you know what to do!
