On July 13th, the City of Houston – Housing and Community Development Department hosted its 6th Annual Career & Opportunity Fair at Houston Community College’s West Loop Campus. The Fair was a rousing success, with 80 employees in attendance and a whopping 3,600 job openings available to the members of the public who were present at the event.
The Fair was introduced by Dr. Madeline Burillo-Hopkins, the President of HCC Southwest & Vice Chancellor of Workforce at Houston Community College. Her introduction was followed by a series of speeches by Councilwoman Sallie Alcorn, Councilwoman Letitia Plummer, and Councilman Mike Knox. Among the Career Fair’s highlights, Mayor of the City of Houston, Sylvester Turner, welcomed the event’s attendees via video.
The City of Houston kindly provided breakfast and lunch to all vendors and staff to thank them for their attendance. The Fair, which was open to the public, saw a turnout of 1,400+ jobseekers, who each received an opportunity to conversate and network with employers in the Greater Houston Area, participate in on-the-spot interviews for part-time, full-time, and internship positions, and receive free career coaching and expungement services. Additionally, free COVID vaccines and boosters were administered by the Houston Health Department, and the Harris County Election board assisted attendees with voter registration at the event.
This event came to fruition via a partnership started in 2022 with the Housing and Community Development Department and HCC Career and Job Placement Services: last year’s event saw a turnout of 1,200+ jobseekers. This annual Fair continued to prosper this year, as KTSU and Houston Television documented the event’s success and highlighted some of the Fair’s speakers.
