Success at Career and Job Placement Services Annual Retreat

Career and Job Placement Services conducted its Annual Retreat this past June 23rd at the Collaboratorium in the HCC West Houston Institute from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. The event was hosted by Director, James Mable, and chaperoned by members of Career and Job Placement Services staff, Marthaleen Cooper and Chadwick Roberts. The event gave Career Services staff an opportunity to discuss best practices, propose solutions to an ongoing challenge in the Career Services field, and win prizes in the process.

A presentation conducted by Director, James Mable, provided an overview of the progress made by the department throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, including the number of unique logins, resume uploads, job applications, and appointments made by students on CareerHub during this period. This first presentation established a goal to increase career/professional development and interview opportunities for HCC students.

The retreat followed with a series of Roundtables conducted by three members of Career Services staff who attended the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SoACE) 2022-2023 Conferences: Filecha Lucas, Sharon Thomas, and Vonda Dargin. These roundtables, conducted in a breakout session format, featured takeaways from the attendees’ experience at the Conferences and tips to build a professional network. These breakout sessions were concluded as Black Walnut Café catered lunch for the retreat’s attendees.

Nathan Rosas, a Career Specialist at the Northwest College, spoke to staff about “Creating a Resume that Markets Your Brand”, as he named his presentation, which instructed staff on how to aid students in crafting a more effective and marketable resume.

To conclude, Summer 2023 Career Fairs, Dell Technologies’ recent partnership with Career Services, employee workshops and the upcoming implementation of AI software for resume revision were discussed.

Nathan Rosas spoke to staff about “Creating a Resume that Markets Your Brand.” The retreat successfully gathered Career Services staff members from around the HCC district, presented progress for the 2022-2023 academic year, and gave attendees the opportunity to propose solutions and provide suggestions for ongoing challenges and upcoming events.
