Success with Automation

Success with Automation

Innovation Tech Series - Episode 26

With #returntowork, the unscripted conversations or chance interactions have finally made their way back. These Coffee / Tea conversations were an important aspect of #Innovation at the workplace, definitely one of the things that got impacted during the pandemic.

Let me reflect on one such conversation we had today morning with Praveen Sharma and Sachin Gupta on what is required for a Successful #Automation. The first and foremost thing we agreed was to look at low hanging fruits to save cost, which can be then leveraged to fund the other automation programs. Then we spoke about how looking at the overall Business process rather than individual tasks is key to achieving the best outcome. Sometimes things can be done in a different way thereby optimize resources and get more efficient & productive outcomes. Hence understanding how the various activities or applications come together to solve a business problem is important before automation approach is firmed up. This requires co-innovation with the various stakeholders from the IT & Business organization with focus on the Business process, technical applications & the experience of the end client. We further discussed how the choice of the right tool is important for speed, efficiency & scalability. Finally, we agreed that we need to experiment with a Proof of concept or initial MVPs (minimum viable product) to identify any short comings or areas of improvement; and then iterate the automation in an Agile manner. Finally, we spoke about how multi-skilled employees are key to the success of the program. So, in summary

1 – The goals in mind being Acceleration of Application, Innovation around Processes & Elevation of end customer’s experience.

2 – With that goal in mind, look at the overall Business Process for Improvement before beginning to automate; and then Automate the Process instead of individual activities.

3 – Start with a Proof of Concept & then iterate with a Agile approach

4 – The right tool selection which enables Automation; and a Full Stack enabled Talent that facilitates the same.

At #ibmconsulting , we have pioneered automation for our clients, and a quick search on this topic led me to the below article. A lot of it resonated with our morning discussion, a nice read for those who want to understand Why Business Automation Initiatives Fail and How to Avoid Them

Deepak Gupta rightly said, when people come together and do conversations magic happens automatically which we can't even imagine, that's the beauty of team. This multiplies in many folds when we meet in person and do the same. Looking at overall business process, bringing all stakeholders together is what we do in Value Stream mapping - eliminate wastage/wait time etc Lean thought, so that efficiency improves. Automation and leveraging devops tools and mindset is important activity to accelerate the process that helps quick to market. Thanks for sharing your thoughts - it's Agile #teamagile #ibmconsulting

Deepak Gupta nicely articulated !! Agile approach will ensure that there is still room to think outside the box (or process) and encourage creativity. Also, if we link the objective to a real time customer situation and understand the motivation behind finding a solution to a certain problem, it will open up a whole range of possibilities.

You are right Deepak; we need to experiment with a Proof of concept to identify areas of improvement; and then iterate the automation in an Agile manner. Also we should be persistent and have an optimistic mindset.
