Achieving balance between work and life is a common struggle for those of us that have achieved a lot and therefore have a lot more responsibilities.Sometimes it can feel like the whole world rests on your shoulders. But I got you, in this article, I want to share some practical strategies to help you thrive in both your career and personal life without sacrificing one for the other.

Finding Balance: Two Essential Strategies

Prioritize with Purpose:

Successful people understand that not all tasks are created equal. They prioritize activities that align with their values, goals, and long-term vision.

I work with a lot of entrepreneurs that have more say so in how they are able to align the work that they do but I also work with high performers that work in corporate America so I understand that in many cases, you don't get to choose which tasks to prioritize—often, your organization set the agenda, and it's your responsibility to ensure those tasks are completed effectively.

However, let's seek evidence that achieving balance is possible. Many individuals still maintain a sense of equilibrium amidst the chaos, proving that it's a skill anyone can learn. The first step is recognizing that failing to prioritize tasks effectively within the constraints of your organizational goals and directives can lead to a host of negative consequences.

Signs that you might not be prioritizing effectively include constantly feeling overwhelmed, struggling to make progress on important projects, and experiencing burnout. This can manifest in missed deadlines, decreased team morale, and strained relationships with colleagues.

You may look at those signs and feel like you’re off the hook but here are some subtle but detrimental signs of ineffective prioritization that I’ve noticed in some of my clients… and remember we’re talking about your work life, your personal life or both:

  • Lack of Focus: Finding it challenging to maintain focus on key tasks, often jumping from one task to another without making significant progress on any.
  • Persistent Stress: Feeling a constant undercurrent of stress or anxiety, even during periods of relative calm, which can erode overall well-being over time.
  • Difficulty Setting Boundaries: Finding it hard to establish boundaries between work and personal life, leading to an "always on" mentality that drains energy and diminishes quality of life outside of work.
  • Procrastination: Delaying important tasks or decisions, either due to a sense of overwhelm or a subconscious avoidance of challenging or uncomfortable tasks.
  • Increased Forgetfulness: Frequently overlooking or forgetting important details or commitments, resulting in missed opportunities or increased pressure to catch up later.

These subtle signs may go unnoticed initially but can gradually accumulate, contributing to decreased productivity, diminished satisfaction, and overall dissatisfaction with work and life.

While it may seem challenging to prioritize effectively when your organization dictates the tasks, it is possible. One approach is to assess tasks based on their alignment with overarching organizational goals and directives. This involves asking yourself questions like, "Does this task contribute to our strategic objectives?" and "How does it support the mission and vision of the organization?" By doing so, you can focus your team's time and energy on activities that have the greatest impact and drive organizational success.

In situations where directives are non-negotiable and deadlines are set in stone, it's essential to approach task management with a strategic mindset. Part of being a good leader is learning that it's not good for you or your team to try to do it all, leverage your authority to delegate effectively and allocate resources judiciously. Prioritize tasks based on their alignment with the organization's strategic objectives and potential impact on key outcomes. If necessary, negotiate with stakeholders to adjust deadlines or reallocate priorities to ensure the most critical tasks are completed on time without compromising quality or team morale. Remember, effective leadership requires agility and foresight in navigating challenging situations while maintaining a focus on long-term success.

Effective prioritization extends beyond the boardroom and into our personal domains. Balancing professional responsibilities with personal obligations requires a nuanced approach. By applying the same principles of strategic prioritization used in the workplace to our personal lives, we can optimize our time and energy allocation. Whether it's carving out quality time for family, pursuing hobbies, or nurturing relationships, prioritizing effectively empowers us to lead fulfilling lives both professionally and personally.

Start by identifying your core priorities in both work and life.

What truly matters to you?
What brings you fulfillment and joy?

Then, allocate your time and energy accordingly. Remember, saying "yes" to one thing often means saying "no" to another. Be intentional about where you invest your resources, and don't hesitate to delegate or eliminate tasks that don't align with your priorities.

To help you understand how to do this, I want to share the story about one of my clients, Tiffany.

She's a high-achieving executive navigating the fast-paced world of tech leadership. Despite her professional success, she found herself feeling increasingly frazzled and disconnected from what truly mattered to her. It wasn't until a particularly hectic week at work, where she missed her daughter's school play and skipped her weekly yoga class for the third time in a row, that she realized something needed to change.

Feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained, she hired me to help her because she knew the way she was living her life wasn’t sustainable and she felt horrible about herself for neglecting her family and herself. I’ve touched on healthy boundary setting many times but no matter how much information I share about it, many of you still find yourselves stuck in the same cycle… letting people walk all over you or take advantage of you. This speaks to your struggle with assertiveness, which is often rooted in deeper psychological factors such as low self-esteem or fear of rejection.

For example, imagine a scenario where someone on your team (let’s call her Tanya) constantly interrupts your work with non-urgent requests, causing you to fall behind on your own tasks. It’s gotten to the point where you feel your whole body tighten when you see Tanya coming. Maybe you even go so far as try to hide from her. Yet, despite feeling growing resentment, frustration and overwhelm, you struggle to assert your need for Tanya to leave you alone because you need uninterrupted focus, fearing conflict or disapproval. This pattern of behavior reflects a deeper issue with assertiveness, stemming from perhaps a fear of confrontation or a desire to please others at the expense of your own well-being. Recognizing and addressing these underlying psychological barriers is crucial for breaking free from the cycle of overcommitment and burnout.

Transitioning from recognizing the signs of a deeper issue to taking actionable steps towards change can feel daunting. Additionally, learning to say 'no' to non-essential commitments that drain your resources without adding value can further reinforce your boundaries, creating space for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation, which are crucial for overall well-being.

This step is often overlooked, yet it's the cornerstone of achieving true balance and fulfillment in life. Reflecting on your core values is like laying the foundation of a sturdy house. Without it, everything else built upon it becomes shaky and unstable.

Imagine you're about to go on a road trip without a map or destination in mind. You might get somewhere, but you'll likely wander aimlessly, unsure of where you're headed or why. Doesn’t that sound foolish? So what’s the point of you operating this way in life? Without a clear understanding of your values, you're navigating through life without a compass (this goes deeper than the map metaphor but that’s a topic for a whole nother article), drifting from one situation to the next without a sense of purpose or direction.

Your values serve as your guiding principles, the fundamental beliefs that define who you are and what you stand for. They represent the essence of your identity, shaping your thoughts, decisions, and actions. When your life aligns with your values, you experience a sense of authenticity and integrity, living in accordance with what truly matters to you.

However, many people that I encounter overlook this step because they underestimate its significance. Maybe this is you? Living your life for what society or parents told you you should do rather than even checking if it aligns with YOU. You may assume that your values are implicit or obvious, or maybe you’ve never taken the time to consciously reflect on them. As a result, you find themselves feeling lost and unfulfilled, wondering why you lack direction and purpose in life.

But here's the truth: clarifying your values isn't just a superficial exercise—it's a transformative process that can profoundly impact every aspect of your life. It empowers you to make decisions with confidence and conviction, knowing that they're aligned with your deepest desires and beliefs. It provides clarity amidst the chaos, helping you navigate through life's challenges with resilience and grace.

So, don't underestimate the power of this foundational step. Take the time to explore what truly matters to you, what ignites your passion, and what brings you joy and fulfillment. Your values are the compass that will guide you on your journey to a more balanced and fulfilling life, personally and professionally.

Create daily routines and rituals that support both your professional and personal goals. This could include morning rituals for productivity and evening rituals for relaxation and self-care.

This is a powerful way to cultivate balance in your life. These routines serve as anchors, providing structure and stability amidst the unpredictability of daily life.

By starting your day with a purposeful morning routine focused on productivity and goal-setting, you set a positive tone for the rest of the day. This might include activities like journaling, exercise, or meditation to center yourself and clarify your intentions for the day ahead. By dedicating time to activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, you ensure that you're starting from a place of strength and clarity.

Similarly, incorporating an evening routine for relaxation and self-care helps you unwind and decompress after a busy day. This could involve activities like reading, practicing gratitude, or spending quality time with loved ones. By consciously prioritizing self-care, you replenish your energy reserves and foster a sense of balance and well-being.

Overall, these daily routines act as pillars of support, helping you stay grounded and focused on what truly matters to you. They provide a sense of rhythm and predictability in an otherwise chaotic world, allowing you to navigate through life with greater ease and equilibrium. And while we’re here, let’s call out the elephant in the room: the "I don't have time" excuse. Let's be real here – we all have the same 24 hours in a day. It's not about having more time; it's about making time for what truly matters. By starting your day with a purposeful morning routine focused on productivity and goal-setting, you set a positive tone for the rest of the day. Similarly, an evening routine isn't a luxury reserved for those with ample free time – it's a necessity for maintaining balance and preventing burnout.

Whether it's reading a book, practicing gratitude, or simply taking a few deep breaths, these small acts of self-care can make all the difference in how you feel and show up in the world. So let's drop the excuses and start prioritizing your well-being, one intentional moment at a time. You owe it to yourself to make the time for what truly matters.

So while you may not be able to add extra hours to your day, you can certainly make the most of the time you do have by embracing mindfulness as a tool for greater efficiency, clarity, and peace of mind. Trust me, it's worth a shot.

4. Elevate Your Floor for Enhanced Work-Life Balance:

Instead of aiming for incremental improvements, strive to elevate your floor—the baseline level of performance and satisfaction—in both your professional and personal life. Raising your floor involves setting higher standards for what you consider acceptable and actively seeking opportunities for growth and fulfillment. By doing so, you create a new normal characterized by increased productivity, fulfillment, and well-being.
