I believe that everyone here has been in the job interview before. Some people might had it several times already while some people just had it for the first few times. However, there is one thing that all of them share in common ... guess what??? .... 'EXCITED' !!!
Once you received the call from recruiter/HR for the job interview, you started to get excited. Some of them might go to google and type something like 'How to prepare for the job interview' or 'Interview question'. I am not saying that I wouldn't suggest you to do that. But, logically thinking ... it's not only you got call for the interview on that role or even on that day. I believe that you agree with me on this. So, if every candidates use the same preparation bible, what will be your unique selling point? Assume that all of the candidates who got call for the interview on that role are all qualified!!
In order to be successfully in the job interview, there are easy steps that I would like to suggest you to follow;
- Wear the clothes that you comfortable and confident: Ideally, business casual. You don't have to look nice in a new dress that you just bought, wear the one that you most comfortable with. Be confident is the key.
- Visit company's website: One of the best thing that you can do is to study the business of the company. Try to gather on the important information e.g. business/service, values, mission, vision, goal, operation.
- Understand the role and responsibility of that position: It will be impressive for the interviewer to see the candidates are well-prepared and understand clearly on the expectation of the role. You may try to think further on what you can do in your role to support the growth of the firm.
- Have enough sleep and arrive there 10 - 15 minutes before the appointment: Make sure that you won't be there too early (30 minutes is a little too much). If you will be there late, call recruiter/HR as earliest as you can to inform that you will be there late by ... minutes.
- Prepare some questions that you can't find the answer on the internet by yourself: It would be nice if you can show your proactive level by prepare the list of questions, but make sure that those aren't on the internet or it's not too deep and confidential. Make sure your questions look smart, and please don't ask about the benefits package at this stage. They will sure tell you later if you are a successful one.
- Use your experience to answer the question: the questions that the interviewers ask during the interview, you can answer than by using your experience. If you never do or don't know the answer, just be honest. You may tell them honestly that you never have experience in this particular area. However, you may also try to answer but keep it short and precise. Don't try to say you know or you have done it before, they will get doubt and know that you never done it anyway.
- Be yourself and shine: Don't make yourself to be a robot by copying the interview answer from interview Q&A on internet. Express yourself, your personality, especially your thought. Be the person as who you are, be confident and do not afraid of failure. Remember that, being yourself is the key. By being yourself, it will differentiate you from the other candidate. Use this opportunity to sell them your unique identity. Also, the more you confident in yourself, the more they confident in you.
Basically, don't think that during the interview, it is the time for the firm to make decision on whether they will choose you or not. It is also the time for you to make the decision as well that you would like to be a part of this family or not. Use this opportunity to observe the communication style, discuss about the job related issues, observe your future boss's perspective, then find out if it is something that you feel fit with.
Let me know if this help. Feel free to share your thought!
