Is Substack the new X? —?EcoSend Weekly
Hello!
‘Choose an eco-friendly email service’ was recently stated as one of the top marketing strategies by Influencer Marketing Hub to create a greener future.
EcoSend proudly made the list, adding to some of the growing praise we’ve been getting lately. We are always grateful for your mentions about our work to reduce the environmental impact of sending emails.?
However, rest assured, we’ve still been keeping up the good work behind the scenes! Just this week, we’ve made improvements to our Email Builder and EcoSend Forms.
So we thank you again for being here, and we hope you’ll check out what’s new after you’ve finished reading this week’s edition!
Until next week,
Rachael

SUBSTACK IS NO LONGER A NEWSLETTER PLATFORM?
That's according to growing user feedback about how Substack has started to prioritise being a social media platform instead?
Email consultant Jordie van Rijn posted an interesting observation on LinkedIn recently, stating that “Substack isn’t delivering your newsletters.”
The general consensus is that while you can still publish newsletters on Substack, the platform is now leaning towards becoming a social media network. Specifically, an alternative to X according to some Reddit users.?
John Cleese even announced he was leaving X and his 5.4 million followers after 18 years for Substack.

So what does all of this mean if you rely on Substack to publish your newsletters? Well, as we highlighted last week, building a following on any platform you don’t own is risky.?
If for any reason your account gets deleted, or the platform itself becomes intolerable, you can’t just move all of your contacts across like you can if you switch email providers.?
Simply put, we believe newsletters belong on a dedicated newsletter platform where you own your customer data.?
For any business which does any kind of email marketing, this is yet another reminder that both your website and email list are incredibly valuable assets and ultimately, what you should be investing the most time and energy into.
UK'S PLANS FOR AI COULD DERAIL PLANS FOR NET ZERO?
If government targets for AI are met, it could be responsible for more than 25% of the UK's total energy consumption
As a sustainable email platform, the carbon footprint of digital activity including AI has been on our minds since the day we founded EcoSend.?
However, it seems the message still isn’t getting through to the UK government, who continue to press ahead with grand plans for AI with little word on the environmental impact this will have.
The Conversation has published a damning assessment in response, citing that “UK’s plans for AI could derail net zero”—this is based on AI being incredibly energy intensive.?
It adds that if the government were to meet its current targets on AI, the energy required would equal more than one quarter of the UK’s total energy consumption for 2021.?
WORLD’S FIRST LAB-GROWN MEAT FOR PETS GOES ON SALE
Hugo, CEO (Chief Eating Officer) at EcoSend was watching BBC Chews over his cup of pawfee this morning when he came across an exciting story to wrap up this week’s edition.
Meatly is the world’s first lab-grown dog food which aims to not only offer meat-free dog food, but in a way that also dramatically cuts the carbon emissions of pet food.?
According to a study by the University of Edinburgh, the dog food industry emits more greenhouse gases than countries such as Mozambique and the Philippines. It adds that if dog food were a country, it would be the 60th biggest emitter of CO2.?
If you have never considered the carbon emissions produced by feeding your dog before, Meatly is a brand to check out.
Taste testers at The Doghouse in Bristol noted that it ‘tastes exactly like regular dog food’. (Well, one dog owner somehow came to that conclusion on their dog’s behalf as they spoke about it on the news.)?
Environmentally conscious pet owners can find Meatly for sale exclusively in Pets At Home stores.
