???????????????? ????????????????????????: The Subscapularis is a very important muscle in overall shoulder movement and stability, but it often gets blamed as the main cause of dysfunction. While it can be an issue, it must also be considered with the Infraspinatus muscle and posterior joint capsule in overall function. I would say 95 percent of soft tissue practitioners fail to treat this muscle correctly. Usually, that isn’t even on the correct muscle, instead of on the lats or teres major. The other issue is they are too compressive on the muscle and get too much depth on it and not enough tension. Tension is what causes a mechanical change in the tissue and restores the range of motion.
????????-????????: Slow down when palpating this muscle, you might think you are on the muscle, but more than likely you are not! Use a heck of a lot less compression. Understand is you are trying to find one muscle to blame for the dysfunction you aren’t seeing the whole picture. Yes, the subscapularis is a factor, but it must be considered with the other muscles of the rotator cuff and overall shoulder function. This comes from learning to think critically, and asking the right questions about the injury before you jump into treatment. As we always say, “how can you ever expect to fix a problem if you don’t know what it is in the first place?”
??????????: In the comments section below is a video of advanced palpation of the subscapularis.
