Amazon forced to increase ad transparency in the EU

This story is from late March and escaped our notice at the time, but it is worth resurfacing. Amazon unsuccessfully fended off a change brought about by the European Commission in a recent ruling from their highest court. The ads transparency requirement is part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), an online governance and algorithmic accountability rule book, which Amazon’s marketplace has been subject to since late August 2023. Basically, Amazon will have to be more transparent about the ads it displays and monetizes since it’s a “very large online platform” (VLOP, an acronym that will never stop being hilarious).?

What does this mean for us Amazon advertisers? The easiest comparison to make is to that of the Meta Ad Library, where you can visit a page detailing all the ads currently running for a brand across Meta platforms. As an example, here is a search I did in Canada for ads related to the keyword “maple syrup”. I can see ads from various brands, but more importantly filter to see ads from one specific brand. Imagine this feature on Amazon: You know a competitor has huge sales and is crushing it with ads. All you need to do is find their brand on the ad library, and now you have a full view on their creative, ad copy, photos, messaging and so on. What a powerful hack. Thanks, European Commission! ??

Big changes to the dietary supplements policy

Amazon is finally getting strict about supplements.?All dietary supplement products listed on Amazon must undergo verification by a third-party Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) organization to ensure they meet the platform's safety standards. The "Manage Your Compliance" dashboard will now display which of your listings need to be verified, along with their respective deadlines. Failure to comply by the due dates could result in the removal of your listings (yikes). To align with these changes, you'll need to initiate a test for each of your products through the specified third-party TIC organizations, as instructed on your compliance dashboard. Once your products are confirmed as compliant, they will be eligible for sale. Furthermore, Amazon is organizing a live webinar on April 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time, to discuss this policy change and answer any queries you might have. For more information on how to get started on the verification process, click on the link below.
