SUBLIMINALLY HOSTILE

PART ONE - ?"You gotta understand."?The words may seem less hostile, but the meaning is the same "shut up and listen".?The truth is that no one else has actually got to understand what you are demanding.?The onus is not on them, but on you to clearly state your case, and the almost ubiquitous "you gotta understand" is a way of telling others they are wrong for not agreeing with you while not having/showing the facts to support your case or show your reasons. It's an "excuse phrase" telling others to see it your way. It implies that the reason they do not agree with you is their inability to grasp your superior insight or knowledge.

2 年In some cultures, asking "do you understand" is considered OK. In some others is just outright hostile. It is borderline "are you ???". It is always the speaker who has to make the effort to be heard. If someone doesn't "get it", it is not their fault, it is ours. Let's go with what George Bernard Shaw said once: "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place."
