SUBJECT: DOES API RP 582 ALLOW PARTIAL PENETRATION JOINTS WITH GMAW-S?
Introduction: The designer should design art of drawings which is deemed to incorporate what kind of legal weld portions has to play the ARC ROD Machines on the daily basis for welder (again it should be legally purchased materials MTC without any forgery documentation, Material should be clean with grinding & buffing what WPS welding procedure to be stipulated, no dirt’s, without black rust).
(Iron (II)oxide – Fe3O4 (limited oxygen) Rust from Iron (III) oxides with limited oxygen and low moisture results in black rust. Black rust can be visually identified as a thin, black film which is the result of oxidation in a low oxygen environment. Black rust has an appearance of almost a black stain) & not every configurations always required full penetration but in times the designer has to go with Partial penetration & it is a talent of the welder in any angles of complex situation of weld combining both butt & fillet, compound or super imposed or any flare joint, thus welder will penetrate partially with his ability & if design requires go for full deep & satisfy the owners requirement by daily welding, the artist welder will take a bit time from normal to sculpt the penetrations, the emergency case with high heat input mostly falls under repairs & if you see most of the welders, sharpens the rod in ground level as always and penetrates softly, smoothly, safely at same time without any distortions with high value of quality and quantity, however to understand the joint configuration pictures are attached.
Note: Personally whichever company I have worked is of high quality material procurement, they just do not purchase any black rusted material & this is the basic minimum mandatory requirements of company’s policy, the welders are of high quality legal welders especially in SAUDI ARMACO & after any test, still they have to satisfy first 4 productions legally qualified; However as an inspector I do not find any black dirt rust materials anywhere or any other countries during my inspections, but mostly in Trichy PMT inspections I found all illegal materials especially dark corroded, this is by the approval of the local companies authority purchasing illegally and also trying to accept as it, so I have to always reject the materials as an inspector, other than Trichy or any other locations in India or Arab countries or Far East Asian, I do not find that typical dark rusts materials what I found in Trichy, which is of highly corroded illegal materials & other locations has natural combinations of good quality with all pattern of new materials and also rich brown & chocolate pattern which is in-between Gold & Rose & Silver (Ex Cupronickel, Inconel, Monel Etc.)
Code Descriptions:
AWS A 3.0PARTIAL JOINT PENETRATION WELD.
A groove weld in which incomplete joint penetration exists. See Figures 26(A)-(E) and 26(H)-(J). See also complete joint penetration; complete joint penetration weld, incomplete joint penetration, and joint penetration.??
BS-TWI-DEFINITIONS:
Single side partial penetration butt weld.
Double side partial penetration butt weld.
Fillet welds may be combined with full or partial penetration butt welds - a combination weld. The designer is therefore required to decide whether to use a T-butt weld, a fillet weld or a combination of the two.
Query: Does API RP 582 allow partial penetration joints with GMAW-S? Clause-5.2.3 (ACDG-Scope of Topic)?Answer: Partial penetrations are of many types, butt weld, fillet weld and mixed combination of this two, whichever is client’s requirement.
Let’s look into APIs clause: ACDG.
Clause A Reply: This clause API should rewrite saying ‘’partial penetration for this process shall not be used for branch connections, nozzle to shell welds or socket welds' 'However this clause does not allow partial penetrations, SO THE ANSWER IS NO.
Clause C?Reply: If we say simply root pass welding then all the welds has root, whether it is partial or full penetration, Any weld joints first layer is root, which can be in the form of butt welding or fillet welding or combination of both. Hence this clause also API should rewrite the sentences with clear understanding as per below.?
‘’GMAW-S may be used for full penetration open root pass welding on piping. Full penetration root pass welding with GMAW-S for other application is permitted, provided the full penetration open root pass is completely removed from the back side''
Hence as per what API clause C has written we can weld partial penetration on piping, not necessarily it should be branch or socket, it can be weldolet, nipolet, threadolet, elbolet, flangolet etc, again if we take this as branch, then even pipes attachments can do the jobs whether it is in the form of any pipe supports, sleeves, encirclements, shoes etc.
THE ANSWER IS YES & AS PER THIS CLAUSE C PARTIAL PENETRATION CAN BE WELDED AS PER WHAT API HAS WRITTEN, BUT AS PER WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN YOU CANNOT WELD PARTIAL PENETRATION.
In partial penetration of piping you cannot gouge or grind or back weld, unless your pipe size is too big like more than 50 or 60 inches it is ok, which comes with any branch connections lateral Tee’s, elbolet, nippolets etc, for above 50 or 60 which is the typical requirements of that sized design.
Clause D Reply: Also the same, as fillet is ensured it can also get combined with butt to become partial penetrations. Hence this allowed as per API itself, so YES.
Clause G Reply: If you check Clause G it is written Pipe, so it is clear that it is not any other attachments but pipe only & when you say pipe it is a full penetration joints, unless you don’t write piping or any other fittings. So when you see clause C it says piping and when you say piping it ensures piping and its component fittings, which means we can also take the take as partial penetration within the fitting's. Hence this clause also shall rewrite as Full pen or partial pen.
SO AS PER WHAT API HAS WRITTEN WE CANNOT WELD PARTIAL PENETRATION WITH GMAW-S, SO THE ANSWER IS NO.
Conclusion:
1)????? Answer is Option C Mix of Option A & B
2)????? As per sub divided clauses with what has API has written is NO FOR CLAUSE A & G (which means partial penetration with GMAW-S cannot be welded) & YES for CLAUSE C & D (Partial penetration with GMAW-S can be welded)?
Note: This is lesson learnt from previous projects, great companies will face any problems and solve, but they never stop running the company, however there are some employees or you can say welders whom illegally try to attempt, without knowing their level and companies level, they used to always disturb the company to allow the shortcut welding even after revoked or disqualifications, whereas some genuine employees or welders never disturbs any parties and wait for their time & opportunity, however when the company gets more clients or projects or any huge turnover of profits, company satisfies the genuine employees and gives them more opportunity & (Perks & incentives), so employees more than supporting hand or not, do not disturb the company whether you are young or old, when you do not have basic qualification just don’t try to bother, wait patiently, you will be rewarded compensations for not disturbing the company.?
