The Subconscious Root Of Procrastination And Perfectionism

The Subconscious Root Of Procrastination And Perfectionism

One common issue that highly anxious but motivated individuals face is procrastination. They're doing big things, but find themselves not living up their potential in ways that don't align with their goals:

  • Not showing up to, or cancelling, important meetings
  • Delaying or "forgetting" to send out proposals, pitches, or invoices
  • Delaying or continually reworking lead magnets, marketing materials, and products/services
  • Delaying finishing up work, so that delivery is late or subpar

This is so, so common... especially among the growth-minded but anxious individual.?

These individuals have BIG GOALS - they want to have that fulfilling relationship, they want to get a new job, they want to?

The Subconscious Root Of Procrastination And Perfectionism

Clients often come with?logical reasons for why they procrastinate and engage in perfectionism:?

  • "I just lose track of time"
  • "I have so much to do"?
  • "I just want to get things right before I send it out"?

These reasons are logical, but they aren't the real root.

We know this, because most of my clients who come to me have already tried many things to overcome this negative habit, such as:

  • Taking attention-increasing supplements
  • Using alarms, productivity apps, and to-do lists
  • Shaming themselves into action?
  • Waiting until the last minute so that they feel enough stress to move forward

If the issue was actually that you "just" lose track of time, then an alarm would make all the difference. And again, for many, that is the solution. Get productivity app, follow app, get stuff done.?

But for many, these "hacks" just aren't enough to propel them out of the rut.

The Answer: Letting Go Of The Positive Reasons Why We Engage In This Behavior

All behavior exists for a reason. It all serves a positive and protective for the individual. That doesn't make the behavior positive to engage in for the wholeness of the individual, it just means that there's a reason why the Mind-Body thinks it's important to engage in it.?

So in the Mindset Coaching Program, one of my jobs is to help uncover what you learned and decided as a child which underpins your adult behavior, thoughts, and patterns... including perfectionism and procrastination.?

For example, it could be:

  • Not feeling safe to feel rejection?
  • Feeling like you are "not good enough"
  • Feeling like you "don't deserve good things"
  • Fleeing criticism to avoid repeating a childhood pattern where you were criticized by a parent, mentor, or peer and thus felt rejection
  • Feeling like you don't have anything good to say?
  • Feeling like you are worthless or not worthy?
  • Feeling like no one likes you, so you need to keep adding value in order to be liked?

Again, these are often rooted in the subconscious area of the mind as "knowns", and sometimes aren't even in your conscious awareness most of the time.

But you WILL and DO feel it:

It's that buzz of anxiety when you think about sending your work in to clients.

It's that dread you feel, but can't pinpoint, when you think about charging more, asking for a raise, applying for a job or pitching, attending meetings, and submitting your work.?

It's that overthinking which happens when you try to market yourself or pitch:?

  • "Maybe I should change the price..."
  • "Maybe I need to add more here..."
  • "Maybe I should change the name..."
  • "The branding isn't right..."

How this shows up is 100% unique to you in how it looks, feels, sounds, and shows up.?

Case in point...?

"I Feel Like I Do Things On Time For A Change..."

One client I have faced procrastination and overthinking as a big hurdle to growing.?

He would overthink his prices, what he was charging, and and his services. He'd also procrastinate on sending proposals and finishing his work on time, reducing his ability to please clients and get positive testimonials.?

He?knew this didn't help him, but faced repeating overthinking loops when he tried to change it. One thing led to another led to another which finally brought him back to the beginning.?

The very day after we cleared subconscious images and representations that were holding him back, he found himself naturally responding more quickly and confidently.... even charging more than he was before!?
