Sub Club Stories – Glenn Thompson OAM (Golf Club Captain)

The Club considers our members in everything we do, including how to elevate our level of service and offerings. Over the years, the Club has created a strong community, including within our various Sub Clubs - created to bring together like-minded people.

It’s already known that being active improves your physical and mental health, and can improve your agility not just on the sports field but in the corporate world too.

This week we talked with Glenn Thompson OAM, Tattersalls Clubs Golf Captain and member since 1987. Check the full conversation below.

How long have you been a golfer?

I have been a golfer since the age of 12, which is some 49 years.

What inspired you to take on the role of Golf Club Captain, and how has your experience been so far?

I was inspired to take on the role of Golf Club Captain as I have been a long-time member of Tattersalls and believe that golf is a great sport, which promotes comradery and friendship within the Club.? No one else came forward to take on the role so I decided I would do it on a trial basis which has continued now for xxx years.? The experience has been extremely positive and enjoyable.? I have received enormous assistance from the Club, initially Sara and now Jared, who do most of the hard work which makes my job easy.

Can you share a memorable moment or event during your time as Golf Club Captain that stands out as particularly special to you?

Whilst there have been many memorable events and moments during my time as Golf Club Captain, the first trip to Orange which also included the runners and cyclists was an extremely memorable occasion with great friendships made, improved and maintained - not just between the golfers but between each of the three sub-groups. ?Whilst the golf was extremely enjoyable (I won the event), the social events were absolutely outstanding.

What advice do you have for aspiring golfers within our club, especially those looking to improve their game or get more involved in club activities?

I recommend for every aspiring golfer within our Club to come along to our golf days which are always enjoyable on top-rated courses in Sydney and trips away.? If you are a beginner, then I recommend you have some lessons at one of the nearby driving ranges or golf courses.? The Christmas lunch is always a highlight and anyone thinking about joining the golf sub-group, should come along and enjoy the occasion.

How has the Club contributed to your social and sports life?

The Club has greatly contributed to my social and sports life by allowing me access to the gym and sporting facilities and activities of many of the sub-clubs.? In particular, the comradery in the gym and classes are inspiring and makes you want to continue and improve. Without Tattersalls Run Club, I would never have run a half marathon let alone completed the marathon in New York in 2016.? Doing the training with Damian Tancred and participating in the event with Damian, Naomi and other Tatts members together with my brother was one of the highlights and one of the most memorable sporting achievements of my life.
