Stupid Job Search Tricks For Age 40, 50 Or 60 Job Seekers

Stupid Job Search Tricks For Age 40, 50 Or 60 Job Seekers

Most?job seekers in your 40s, 50s, or 60s have been taught to use stupid job search tricks on their resumes

You probably try these same tricks, because nearly everyone uses them. They're taught to?age?40+ job seekers by outplacement, most career coaches and authors. Your friends and mentors probably recommend you use them. Most professional?resume?writers use these tricks for?age?40+ job seekers

You use them because everyone else uses them ... so they must work, right?

But that's the problem with these stupid job search tips - They backfire, rarely work and cause you to lose opportunities when you're qualified.

Here are some of the worst performing tricks commonly used by?age?40+ job seekers:

  • Trying To Appear Younger On Your Resume:?Sure, you're trying to avoid ageism, but deception isn't the way to do it, because employers almost always catch deceptive behavior ... it's part of HRs job. When you give employers the perception that you're younger than you really are, it almost always backfires when you're face to face (or worse, on video) with the employer. Even if you think you look younger than you are, I've never yet seen a job seeker who could pull off a 5 years age difference face-to-face in a stressful situation, in front of a critical audience. You can't build trust through deceit, and if you can't build trust, you're won't get hired.
  • Excluding Early Career:?You've probably been told that your early career doesn't matter, so you should leave it off your resume (some outplacement firms and career coaches call this as an ageless resume). Many career coaches/authors tell you that including early career can get your resume screened out by ATSs. But the problem with excluding your early career is ATSs, human reviewers, and hiring manager notice that you're purposely leaving information off your resume, so it smells like deception. And this deception adds another risk to you as a candidate: "What are you hiding?".
  • Looking Like A Criminal:?Excluding dates and chunks of time is the same trick used by candidates with things they really do need to hide (like theft, fraud, jail time), and you give the same impression to employers when your resume leaves off early career or education dates.

These stupid tricks can get you screened out by the ATS, human pre-screeners, hiring managers, and cause you to fail to advance or get offers.

Good thing there are more effective ways to beat ageism than trying to fake your age or exclude early career. The best way to make employers realize that age doesn't matter is by proving to hiring managers your age doesn't matter - Because you've performed at higher levels than your competitors regardless of your age.

The resume tips are helpful; however, perhaps the most important tip is having 40+ job seekers focus on networking. Their wealth of connections may be the most effective tool in finding that next opportunity.
