STUFF EVERYONE ELSE! Create for YOU.

STUFF EVERYONE ELSE! Create for YOU.

Morena,

As the world of social media evolves and the algorithms get smarter by the second in ways to keep us consuming more than ever before, I have started to the think more about our consumption mindset, and for those of us who constantly create content to put out into the ether - why we do what we do on social media.

I’ve been creating content for years and one thing I have been always wary of is the danger of pleasing others with what you create and WHY you create. I’m super conscious now that the mass majority of people creating are NOT creating for them. But for others. This is dangerous because you then essentially hamstring yourself to the NEEDS of what others expect from you. I NEVER want this to be the case which is why every year or so I just pick up my phone and delete all my social media apps. YUP - I literally just delete EVERYTHING and go on with life. Haha. I it doesn’t even phase me.

I just never want to feel that I am only CREATING for others expectations or needs from me. And in some cases I don’t feel like I really have anything to say. And that’s ok. Sometimes it’s cool just to shut up and cruise in public silence - like millions of others do. Sometimes it’s fine not to have to post every day on LinkedIn or Facebook.

Those who get caught up feeling obligated to create end up resenting it, and they NEVER have sustainability in their process to continue for years. And even worse they end up not creating with the same passion and the quality of the outputs suffer. I NEVER want to be mentally tied to something like this.

Because of the amount of content and ideas I choose to put into the world I do feel this tension of the expectations of others at times. I do feel people expect a lot from me. A lot of my time. A lot of my energy. And for the most part that’s totally cool. But realistically if all I do is focus on the full needs of others I will never be fully stoked myself. And that isn’t something I choose to do.

The best content I’ve ever created is when I’ve felt like I WANTED to say something, I NEEDED to get it off my chest and I just sent It. The passion is better, the energy is better and the material is better. I also have just created for the sake of it before and it for sure has shown. It’s not as polished. It feels a lil rushed and it was missing some depth which would have made it 10 times better.

Our whole ecosystem of content is changing so fast. In 15 years of social media we have seen some massive shifts of how content has been created, how it’s been distributed and an ever evolving door of how creators have monetized. The great news is Post-Pandemic this latest wave of influencers is slowly calming down as the masses realize not everyone is #BLESSED and how the skewed danger of fake filters and Instagram perfection is sooooooooo detached from reality. I feel that authenticity in humans is slowly rising to the forefront which is a GOOD and REAL thing. Where the momentum from Perfect Instagram shots is now shifting across to fun with friend and family dancing in your PJs on TikTok. Humanising us to how we actually are - Imperfect, Flawed and Real.

The human element for connection won’t change. People want connection. People crave belonging. But just be wary of WHY you’re creating and WHO you’re creating for. Because the addiction to the LIKE buttons, notifications and more is DANGEROUS. For as self aware as I have been around this type of stuff even I have fallen victim to that before. The reality is we have enough time fighting amongst ourselves and each other, now with the algorithms running everything we see - we now have another powerful and dangerous thing we need to try and navigate.

Sooo……

DON’T feel you owe anyone shit with your posts - YOU DON’T

DON’T feel there is one one set way to make it - THERE ISN’T

DON’T put yourself out there is you don’t want to - IT WILL NEVER LAST

DON’T get get trapped into the notification bell giving you fake pops of relevance - IT’S NOT REAL

Andddddd finally….

If you want to create - CREATE

If you have something real you want to say - SAY IT

If you have something epic to SHARE and help others - SHARE IT

Have a point you’d like to make - MAKE IT

Have an idea you want to get into the world - DO IT

Just my 2 cents. Might go delete my social media apps now. I think I feel like it. Haha.

Love this Robett. The things that resonate best out there are totally the things you yourself feel strongly about saying, in my experience. When you do show up with passion, as you've said. I love that the pendulum is swinging back more towards that human element of connecting through content - thanks for doing the good work! :)
