STUFF CHANGES.

I’ve been a voice actor for more years than I’m gonna admit here. Now...maybe this will only speak my fellow thespians, but my hope is this will reach other professions because….well...it seems so much is universal.
One of the greatest lessons I've learned through the years is, STUFF CHANGES. Attitudes. How we reach our target audiences. And for those who use their voice, the feel of the read, who we’re talking with, (not at) how and we’re talking with them, has changed. And technology has changed the way all of us work. Case in point. I used to schlep my work to your offices...which was cool because I got to meet you, but now stuff changed, and I now can iMeet you on multiple platforms and hopefully, you'll iShare my work. See? Stuff changed.
The point? Sometimes I hear complaining about change. But I observed how much more powerful it is to embrace changes. To Dive In! Or as those in improv world say, the answer is always, yes.
So rather than lamenting what used to be...cuz that’s changing faster n faster folks...go "back to school." Whatever that means to you. Immerse yourself in classes or projects that may not be fully related to what you do. Learn whatcha don’t know till ya know it...then go learn more! Those who become fully rounded seem happiest when they’re challenged, fully engaged in new ideas. Oftentimes the stuff you’re learning brings new insight to your current gig. It seeps in then bubbles to the surface right when you need it to. For myself, I've also found it crazy-cool to volunteer for organizations outside your comfort zone. You find diversity, lessons you never had an inkling about. And hey, you're also doing good in the world.
Yes. I bring this to voiceover. Still take classes, still get coaching. New teachers, new classes still make me nervous as HELL because I find out just how much stuff changed and how much I still have to learn. When I'm fortunate enough to guest speak colleges with actors, I tell them all this because I feel it's comprehensive.
I hope these ideas are ones that help you think outside your cubicle. If we can bring them to our clients (and cohorts)...hopefully it makes their jobs easier, better. CHANGIER! That’s a word, right?
Now if you’ll excuse me, my mic is calling me to change something.

7 年Thanks Tim! As a fellow VoiceOverist(??), though certainly not at your level...yet, I needed to read this today. Thanks again for the insight, the push, the incentive. - doug
