Study Smarter, Not Harder! Technology-Enabled Learning Through the Anki App

Guest speaker Dr. Akshita Singh recently visited our Year 11, 12, and 13 students to share insights on effective study techniques, focusing specifically on how to make the most of the Anki app for flashcards.

Anki is a popular tool among medical students due to its spaced repetition system, which helps reinforce knowledge by scheduling review sessions at optimal intervals. The medical student demonstrated how to create digital flashcards for various subjects, emphasizing the importance of breaking down complex concepts into bite-sized chunks and using active recall. By showing practical examples, the student highlighted how Anki can improve long-term knowledge retention, making it an invaluable tool for students preparing for exams or tackling difficult topics.

The Anki app is a powerful, intelligent app because it's more efficient than traditional studying methods.

During the session, Dr. Singh also shared personal tips on how to integrate Anki into daily study routines. She recommended starting with simple flashcards and gradually increasing the complexity as mastery grows. Dr. Singh encouraged the Year 11, 12, and 13 students to stay consistent and make flashcard review a regular habit, emphasizing that the true power of Anki lies in its ability to help students continuously build on their knowledge. By the end of the session, many students felt empowered to incorporate Anki into their own study strategies, confident that this powerful tool could help them retain information more effectively and perform better in their exams.

This was the first time I heard of the app (Anki) and I learned about how to use it and how to prepare for future tests. The way the doctor explained tips on how to study better and faster made me rethink how I was studying. It was a great experience,” said Hamza, Year 11 student that attended Dr. Singh’s talk.

Overall, the use of the Anki app is a great example of exceptional learning experiences due to its scientifically proven learning methods for building long-term memory retention. Additionally, the app provides space to personalise learning so students can exercise control over what and how they study. By adapting to an individual's needs, pace, and learning goals, Anki's AI-driven study schedule helps students learn and review material at more suitable intervals for retention.
