STUDIO LUNCH: Behind the Scenes Edition
Patten Studio
We create experiences that connect people with brands, places, and each other.
What are we up to?
If you've been following us on social media (and you should be) you?know that every few weeks we're moving 900lb of steel in or out of our studio in Building 77.?Of course this?giant metal frame is just the tip of the iceberg—or more accurately, its base. (Fun fact, the base of an iceberg is called a "bummock," and makes up ~90% of the iceberg's mass. The same goes for this sculpture.)
So while we've had the visible elements of the artwork out for finishing, our team has been hard at work wrapping?up production on the base and support structure. . . .
Because the poles that emerge from the base of this sculpture are both curved and tapered, a lot of care goes into perfecting?their verticality and orientation. The poles need to all stick upright relative to our uneven office floor, and the curves need to be facing in the right direction—otherwise the kinetic elements, each of which has its own distinct rotation axis, will collide with one another. Not good! (There's a video about?how we used laser levels to adjust the poles's verticality on our Instagram.)

Each of these poles houses a high-torque motor and one of?our motor controller PCBs right at the tapered end where it attaches to the kinetic element. The space is so tight we have to use the smallest form factor for this PCB, which is about the size of an Oreo cookie but does not taste like one.
Stay tuned for more about this project and others. And as always, if you miss us between newsletters, follow our Patten Studio instagram. We promise that the content is Worth It.
