COVER AND A PAGE FROM STUDENT'S GRAPHIC NOVEL

Students can learn so much from doing a project that they care about.

Or Authentic projects can meet multiple competencies. (ed-speak) Kelly W.

?My students read?Welcome to the Monkey House, a book of short stories by Kurt Vonnegut. My teaching partner and I had them choose one short story each and turn it into a graphic novel or comic. They had to storyboard, edit text, and create images to retell their story with the same flavor and ironic humor to live up to the Vonnegut tradition. It was as if they were dramaturgists, deciding what to keep and what to cut from a script. They had to decide which image would be worth 1000 words and which words they could not live without.

The subjects of the short stories in?Welcome to the Monkey House?ranged from 1950s predictions of the end of civilization, the space race, and men coming home from the Korean War. Then, the students deconstructed the stories and retold those stories using images and text and learned history, politics, geography, science, storytelling, graphic design, digital illustration, and how to deal with editors and art directors. (Me and my teaching partner)?

The students had agency in choosing the story and the style of images, and formatting the content. Everyone's graphic novel or comic looked different, and they looked great together.
