Student Spotlight: Lauren Lewis
Breathe BioMedical Inc.
Developing an accurate breath test to detect early-stage breast cancer in women.
Student interns have a big impact on the work we do at Breathe BioMedical (BBM). The expertise and experience student interns provide in our workplace is invaluable. At BBM we treasure the opportunity to learn from our student interns while providing them an exciting place to learn and grow.?
Lauren Lewis is currently pursuing her master’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Toronto. This winter, Lauren joined our team as a Clinical Research Intern at BBM.?
Lauren was drawn to BBM due to her passion for leveraging engineering principles to advance patient care and make healthcare more accessible and equitable. Having worked on a research project focused on factors contributing to advanced diagnoses of head and neck cancer, Lauren “recognized the critical need for innovative technologies in disease and cancer screening”. BBM's mission to revolutionize early disease detection with our breath-based platform aligned perfectly with her academic interests and career goals. What helped Lauren’s decision was when she spoke with the clinical team before applying. “I saw how friendly everyone was and they spoke very highly about the workplace culture as one that is supportive, collaborative, and inclusive, which further reaffirmed my desire to work here”, said Lauren.???
During her internship at BBM, Lauren has been actively involved in the development of a new protocol for our breast cancer study. Working closely with the clinical team, she has collaborated with medical experts from the US and Canada to ensure the technical integrity of the protocol and the quality of the data to be collected. Lauren is excited to continue contributing to the various aspects of the project as it progresses throughout the rest of her term. ?“Lauren has shared great insights with the clinical team during this term”, said Joanne Young, VP Clinical for BBM. ?“Lauren has been a valuable addition and helped to advance several projects. It has been interesting to chat about what she has learned in her program and then how challenging it can be to apply these learnings in real-world settings”. ?
