Student Snapshot Series: Madelin Rioux

Madelin Rioux , a native of Collingwood, Ontario, is a forward-thinking 3rd year student specializing in data science. As a computer science major at the University of Ottawa, Madelin set her sights on making a tangible impact in the world through her work.

Madelin embarked on her first co-op experience in May 2023. While visiting her co-op office at the university, she stumbled upon an opportunity with Brookfield Renewable at our Gatineau office. Drawn to the company's focus on renewable energy, which aligned perfectly with her personal values, Madelin eagerly applied.

During her interview, Madelin met with Ali Marandi, Senior Manager of Cyber Security, who played a pivotal role in shaping her perception of Brookfield. Ali's enthusiasm and passion for the company, along with his emphasis on making a positive difference, resonated deeply with Madelin. She knew she had found a place where she could gain hands-on experience and actively contribute to addressing important environmental challenges.

Throughout her co-op with our Cyber Security team, Madelin had the opportunity to participate in strategic meetings and attend important presentations that are centered around data security and legislation. These experiences not only provided her with exceptional learning opportunities but also allowed her to gain valuable insights into these important areas.

Furthermore, she had the chance to actively participate in meetings concerning the Duke Energy acquisition. This exposure allowed her to witness a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity, ensuring the protection of operations throughout the acquisition process.

One aspect of Brookfield that captivates Madelin is the company's open office concept. This unique work environment allows her to collaborate closely with professionals across different levels, including Angie Davis, PEng the Senior Director of IT. Sharing her desk with someone as experienced and knowledgeable as Angie provides Madelin with valuable mentorship opportunities and the chance to learn from a seasoned industry leader.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Madelin actively contributes to promoting women in the STEM field. She was recently voted as the Vice President of Club WISE (Women in Science and Engineering), a club dedicated to empowering women in the field of science and engineering. Through Club WISE, Madelin and her fellow members work tirelessly to promote diversity, provide mentorship opportunities, facilitate interview practice, and foster networking within the STEM community.

Madelin's experiences at Brookfield have shaped her aspirations for the future. It has strengthened her belief that one's career should be a reflection of their passion and purpose. This valuable insight has set her on a path of purpose-driven ambition, inspiring her to pursue a future where her personal values and professional aspirations are intricately woven together to lead a fulfilling and meaningful career.
