A Student of Life

A Student of Life

This past Friday night, my wife and I went to the Antonian High School football game to watch our daughter Helena perform on the dance team.

Interestingly, when I was young, I never thought I would be going to a football game to watch people perform to music.

It’s funny how life works out, right? Ha!

A Student of Life

As we approached the entrance, two gentlemen sat at a table collecting payment from the fans.

My wife had me carry a box of dance team supplies, so I attempted to jokingly get in the game for free …

Hello! I’m here to deliver the pizzas!”

After they chuckled, I asked how much we needed to pay to gain entrance to the game.

One of them said (perhaps a little on the poking fun side), “Are you a student?”

I quickly responded, “Yes, sir! I’m a student of life!”

He laughed and said, “Aren’t we all! It’s $8 per person.”

The Game

As the South Texas weather goes in late October, it was very mild and in the low 80’s. It was a beautiful evening under the lights.

The Antonian football squad played very well and prevailed.

However, I was there watching our daughter perform her dance routines. She is back on track after a leg injury, and she participated in most of the events.?

As my wife and I watched her, I’m sure both of us were thinking about how the years had passed so quickly. It seems like not that long ago she was a little girl getting started with dance lessons.

Today, she is just a couple of years away from university life!

The Student

As I reflect on Friday night, this is all part of being a student of life. The fact is that I am constantly learning new things.

I don’t have a cheat sheet to prepare me for some of the things that will happen, whether they are good or bad.

On Saturday, the day after the game … my wife and I were together doing the following …

  • Attending an afternoon birthday party for a parish friend who turned 70. I guess older people like us have birthday parties in the afternoon. Too funny!
  • Teaming up with parish volunteers to store supplies in a storage unit.
  • Hanging out with St. Matthew’s friends at their annual parish festival.
  • Attending the Knights of Columbus Wine and Cheese event at Holy Spirit.

On the drive home on Saturday, my wife said, “Wow! This was a great day! It was good to see so many friends today!”

As you can see from these events, being a student of life is actually fun!

There are no midterms or final exams! We really do not have any pressing assignments.

The grading rubric is based on Pass / No Pass.

The main item on the grading rubric: “Love and respect others.”

Wow! God is good! All the time!

See you next week, my friends!
