As an already accomplished attorney from China, Chancy C. has achieved another significant milestone in her career: passing the California Bar Exam! “My dream has always been to become an international intellectual property attorney,” Chancy said. “Now, it’s becoming a reality.” On December 6, she took her Attorney’s Oath, solidifying her dual licensure in both California and China.

Chancy’s LL.M. journey at UC Davis began in the spring semester, where she quickly adapted to her new environment. “In my first month, I struggled to fully understand my professors in class,” she recalled; “But as Professor Morri said, once you push through the hardest part, things become easier.” By her second month she had acclimated to life in King Hall as she kept pace with the lectures and participated in extracurricular social events.

“Before arriving in Davis, I only knew it was a small, rural town, and that impression proved true. Life here is completely different from what I was used to in China. However, I gradually fell in love with this place. The more I connect with the people and immerse myself in the atmosphere, the more I appreciate how relaxed and friendly the environment is. I came here with a plan, and I’ve been steadily working toward it.” That plan included passing the California State Bar.

Preparing for the California Bar Exam during the summer was a disciplined yet fulfilling endeavor for Chancy. She maintained a balanced routine of studying, swimming, and cooking while limiting social interactions to stay focused. In November, she passed the bar exam, allowing her to be sworn in to the State Bar and take the Attorney’s Oath.

In addition to academic and professional accomplishments, Chancy formed deep friendships with classmates and locals alike; “I took the bar exam at the end of July, and the very next day, I met my current neighbor and now one of my closest friends, Ruth. She constantly sends me positive energy and is always willing to help. I’ve learned to always be grateful when someone is there to listen to you, no matter your situation.”

“I truly appreciate all the people I’ve met here. Real knowledge isn’t only found in the classroom; it’s also found in the people you meet and the experiences you have. I know my story will continue, and I’ll keep striving to make it wonderful because life is short. One year passes in the blink of an eye. I will always cherish my time here and miss Davis."
